Good evening / morning / afternoon everyone.

Its that time again........

Who`d have thought, back in the first week of November, we would be sitting sweet on the edge of the play-offs waiting to cement our place for a serious run at the the chance of getting into the Premiership? It would have taken a brave fan to put their house on us going up - we arent there yet. We were a stuttering side, looking like it was going to be another mid-table season in the Championship. We showed flashes of brilliance, but there was no consistency. We know the story and what has happened since.
1648883512052.png
There has been a welcome International Break - a chance for our small squad to recuperate and take stock of where we are and what we need to do to achieve our ultimate aim: its become clear, that Chris Wilder has genuinely held the view that we could make the play-offs this season. He`s wisely been cautious about his aspirations in front of the media - hes not been backwards in coming forwards - hes put a good few journalists to the sword - but hes never been arrogant or made promises which cant be kept.
1648883564067.png
We`ve all [just about] got on the "bus" and enjoined the journey - including knocking out two established Premiership sides in the FA Cup, seeing the cementing of young talent as regular fixtures in the squad - Josh Coburn and Jonesy. Not just that, we`ve seen a reborn Tav show what hes really capable of. Such a great talent has honed his skills and at only 23 is a regular first name on the team-sheet. Johnny Howson has been reincarnated(!) - playing a crucial role in the midfield - looking more than capable alongside the best sides we have played this season. No issues racing alongside multi-million pound players at Old Trafford or against Spurs. Hes evolved into the sort of Captain we knew he could be: a role model to older pro`s and up-and-coming talent. He looks fitter now than since he first arrived at the club 5 years ago - thats testament to the coaching methods and guidance of wilder and his team.
1648883726236.png
Sol and Pelts have shown cool-as-a-cucumber attitudes when its been needed: there`s no replacement for experience when it comes to soaking up pressure and passing that crucial ball. Just look at that sublime pass to Isaiah for his first goal. Sol - from deep in defence, fires a pin-spot ball to the right wing - within seconds we see our prize right-back sticking it in the net in front of a jubilant North Stand. Its testament to Jonesy - a ha - that he continues to progress in spite of all the media speculation about his future. Never getting beyond himself, hes demonstrated dedication and desire to improve his game and remain a solid fixture in the team heading towards the play-offs. Whats not to love about our skinny lanky lad - taking on burly defenders and skinning the most seasoned old pro`s.
index.jpg
Dael and Paddy have hardly had a bad game in a long gruelling season. We cant expect 10/10 from anyone, but both have shown they have qualities as men as well as players - Dael has stuck to his tasks, particularly against Ronaldo and Kane. He was stuck to Ronaldo and must have whispered "alright mate" on a few occasions at Old Trafford. Dael seems like hes played for ten years in the first team - but hes still only 25. Hes still with us and hasnt let paper talk upset his game. Paddy has taken everything which comes his way. Hes a key player - another "big thank" you to Sunderland! Speaking of which - our Ginger Ninja has continued his upward trajectory - carefully managing his physical condition and adding magical ingredients to each game. His goals against the likes of Blackpool, Huddersfield and Derby [to name but a few] have been a delight to watch. But hes come into his own as a team-player. His ability to drag defenders wide and run through brick-walls has been exceptional. Anfernee has shown fight in getting his fitness back. Hes arriving in the "right place" with just the nine games left to go. Our Joe, continues to save us from oblivion - in spite of the occasional heart-stopping moment! Neil and Andraz have been essential cogs in wilders Wheel.

So its back to the most crucial nine game mini-season of the season!? We have it within our grasp to get back in the magic top six - with two games in hand over Blackburn Rovers [6th] who are only two points above us. We also have a game in hand over QPR - just behind us. We have to be focused and on top of our game EVERY GAME. Huddersfield narrow win tonight over Hull keeps them in the mix - they may have played 40 games, but they are 7 points above us - so it s not made any easier for us.

At the other end of the table - the mighty Rams are now eight points below the trap-door with seven games to go. Reading are looking better since "The Guvnor" Paul Ince, took over. Barnsley`s mini-run appears to have ended , but just who gets relegated is becoming clearer>>>>

A shock 3-1 win over QPR last time out kept Peterborough United’s faint survival hopes alive, with manager Grant McCann saying afterwards that “we’ll give it everything”. The seven-point gap to safety still looks like a mountain to climb with just eight games left, although McCann’s first win at the seventh time of asking in the Peterborough dugout (W1, D2, L4) is at least a platform to build upon.

Now focus shifts to ending a rotten seven-match winless run of home league games (D2, L5). The last time that the ‘Posh’ had a longer such run dates back to 2012, with that winless run stopped at eight games and in a season that they were ultimately relegated from the Championship. A repeat could be on the cards unless Peterborough can notch just a second-ever victory over Middlesbrough in this 12th league H2H (W1, D5, L5).

While Boro were simply outclassed by European champions Chelsea in their FA Cup quarter final, manager Chris Wilder hailed his men for the memories created during the cup run after knocking out two Premier League sides. Attention swiftly turns back to matters of promotion, as Middlesbrough begin their own run of nine ‘cup finals’.

Currently sitting just outside the top six, Middlesbrough can look at their away form as the main culprit for not already being in the playoff places, as they’ve collected only 21 of their 59 points on the road, and have recently conceded at least twice in four straight away trips. Things have improved of late as they’ve managed back-to-back away league clean sheets for the first time since November 2020 (W1, D1), and one more would make it their longest run of away shutouts in the Championship since a four-game run in 2015/16… their last promotion campaign!

Players to watch:

Peterborough’s Jonson Clarke-Harris has scored during both halves in two of his last three appearances, both times making the scoreline 1-1 before half-time.

Boro’s Folarin Balogun will enter the fray in high spirits after scoring three goals across back-to-back games for England U21, and scoring twice over his last three league games.

Hot stat: Middlesbrough have scored eight unanswered goals in matches vs Peterborough.

Middlesbrough make the trip to Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon knowing that victory could move the club into the Championship playoff places.
At a time when Boro are pushing for a return to the Premier League, Peterborough are seven points adrift of safety down at the other end of the standings.

After a period of inconsistency in the Championship, Chris Wilder may have welcomed the distraction of the FA Cup ahead of the international break.

Boro ultimately succumbed by a 2-0 scoreline to a strong Chelsea side, bowing out at the quarter-final stage, but Wilder will be equally satisfied that all of his energy can go into trying to take the North-East outfit back into the Premier League.

Having failed to record back-to-back wins since the middle of January, Boro are certainly not in ideal form, although five wins from 11 league outings have kept them in the running for the playoffs.

Although they sit two points outside of the top six, Wilder will instead focus on the four-point gap to fourth-placed Huddersfield Town with two matches in hand, highlighting that their fate currently remains in their own hands.

In league action, successive clean sheets have been kept against Millwall and Birmingham City respectively, while Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun has netted twice in his last three Championship outings.

Although Boro are naturally regarded as the favourites to see off Peterborough at the weekend, Wilder and co were no doubt left impressed by the performance of their opponents last time out.

Posh were able to end a 15-match winless Championship streak in style, coming from behind to record a 3-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers.

All three strikes came either side of half time, Jonson Clarke-Harris chipping in with a double before Jack Marriott contributed a third soon after his team had taken the lead.

Still sitting well adrift of safety, Grant McCann is aware that his players have much work ahead, but their win at the Kiyan Prince Foudnation Stadium was reward for the upward trajectory of their recent displays.

A total of eight goals have been scored in four matches, a flurry of strikes which make up exactly a quarter of their total goals in the second tier this season.

Team News

Middlesbrough's Andraz Sporar scores their first goal on January 29, 2022

Having sustained a knee issue while on international duty with Northern Ireland, Oliver Norburn looks likely to miss this fixture.
However, Clarke-Harris is expected to be fit after a dead leg, while Sammie Szmodics has been able to rest a groin injury.

Boro defenders Dael Fry and Paddy McNair will both be assessed ahead of kickoff after sustaining groin and foot injuries against Chelsea.
Sol Bamba and Lee Peltier are on standby to deputise for the key duo, while Andraz Sporar and Duncan Watmore are pushing to return in attack.
Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Aaron Connolly is likely to be the player to drop out of the team.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Cornell; Edwards, Knight, Kent; Ward, Taylor, Fuchs, Mumba; Szmodics; Marriott, Clarke-Harris

Middlesbrough possible starting lineup:
Lumley; Dijksteel, Fry, McNair; Jones, Crooks, Howson, Tavernier, Taylor; Connolly, Balogun

SM words green background

We say: Peterborough United 1-2 Middlesbrough

On the back of their surprise success last time out, Peterborough will be full of confidence ahead of a must-win fixture. However, we feel that Boro's extra quality will eventually shine through, potentially collecting all three points during the closing stages when Posh are torn over whether to take risks.

The "Business End" :

A guide to the four-way Championship relegation battle

Date published: Thursday 31st March 2022 8:17 - Nathan Spafford
Reading are in Championship relegation battle
It’s three out of four to exit the Championship at the wrong end. Can Paul Ince save Reading?

⚽Derby County – 24th, 25 points, 39 games played

Why they will stay up

Technically, they are by far the best team in this relegation battle. They may be eight points off safety with seven games left to play, but they have accrued 46 points from their 39 games played so far. The would be in mid-table without the deductions and even just the slightest improvement on that PPG average over the final month of the season should be enough to keep the Rams in with a chance of preserving their Championship status.

Wayne Rooney and co. have managed to transcend expectations and give themselves hope all season despite the clusterf*ck that has been happening off the pitch. Around the New Year, hope turned to expectation and while it has soured since with a lack of momentum stalling Derby’s march to safety, it feels like there is one more miracle in this talented and battle-hardened group of players and management.

And while games against Fulham and QPR might offer little, the other five fixtures are against sides with almost certainly only pride to play for. A far superior goal difference could prove to be a crucial half -point difference come the first weekend in May.

index.jpg
Why they will go down
Points accrued are not points on the board. Derby are in the unenviable position of sitting rock bottom while the three other sides in the battle have picked up some level of form in recent weeks before the international break.

Derby also have no six-pointers left to play in this campaign, with none of the other three relegation battlers – Peterborough, Barnsley and Reading – left to play in the remaining weeks of this campaign. It is not in Derby’s hands to stay up, and it is still out of their own control as to whether the club continues to exist in any division. Such uncertainty is not going to benefit a tired and tightly resourced squad in the battle to stay up.

⚽Peterborough United – 23rd, 26 points, 38 games played

Why they will stay up

Because Peterborough love a bit of drama, don’t they? The Posh are not a club who do things by halves, and they are proving so again as a largely dull and frustrating season has given way to a February and March chock-full of entertainment and drama. Never a team for the 0-0, Peterborough could feasibly concede over 100 goals this season and stay up.

Recent draws against Bournemouth and Stoke as well as a comeback win over promotion-chasing QPR have provided hope and impetus since Grant McCann returned to the club earlier in the year to a club staring relegation in the face under previous incumbent Darren Ferguson. On their day, they can beat anyone. They will need a few of those days to come between now and the end of the season.

index.jpg
Why they will go down
They have won eight games all season, and three of those have come against QPR. They do not play QPR again this season.

They do however have fixtures against Middlesbrough, Luton, Blackburn and Nottingham Forest, who all have designs on getting out of the Championship themselves at the right end. As for McCann, while he has brought some magic into an ailing campaign at London Road, he has suffered relegation in his only previous season as a Championship manager with Hull in 2019/20.

Hull sack McCann

⚽Barnsley – 22nd, 28 points, 38 games played

Why they will stay up

They are in the greatest form of all four teams here. That they were spending this time last year chasing a play-off place and would now celebrate finishing 21st with almost as much vigour as they did securing a top-six berth last May is immaterial. For much of 2021/22, the Tykes looked to be on course to log a record-breaking low points total for the Championship.

Defeat to Sheffield United before the international break will have hurt, but four wins and two draws against Stoke and Fulham from the previous eight games have given Barnsley every chance of remaining at this level next time out under Poya Asbaghi.

Beat Reading this weekend and they are right back in with a chance of staying up, particularly with another six-pointer against Peterborough to come with only Huddersfield of the serious promotion contenders left to face in eight fixtures.

Why they will go down
They have been really crap for a lot of the season. That rubbishness will still haunt all connected to Oakwell going into the final four weeks of the campaign. That game against Reading feels all or nothing too, particularly the latter option if the result goes against Asbaghi’s side.

Should Reading emerge from that six-pointer victorious, they will be eight points clear of the Tykes with just seven games of the season remaining. No pressure then, lads.

⚽Reading – 21st, 33 points, 38 games played

Why they will stay up
They are in a really good position. And like Derby, they know they are (slightly) better than the league table and points tally shows them to be. Should Reading finish below the dotted line of dread given those circumstances and the quite ridiculous squad at their disposal (even with the injury issues), it will be a disgrace.

index.jpg
Why they will go down
But then, Reading are quite capable of being a disgrace. It should be cut and dried, but that wouldn’t make for great content, even in international week. And this is a club who saw fit to hire Paul Ince to save their short and potentially long-term future. Andy Rinomhota and Yakou Meite were this week both ruled out for the rest of the season too, meaning yet more key players are missing crucial parts of the season.

Just like Barnsley, that six-pointer could prove crucial if Reading lose it. It wouldn’t consign Reading to the doldrums of the third tier; indeed, safety would still be in their hands, but the momentum would swing massively against them. If you were to survey a swathe of Royals supporters their confidence levels in staying up despite their relatively secure position compared to the other three sides, you would be met by cries of overwhelming negativity and pessimism. Nobody knows how much this club can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory more than its own fans.

⚽POSH VIEW:

weston-homes-stadium-gv-from-ab-block.jpg
Peterborough United welcome Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough to the Weston Homes Stadium in Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday afternoon (3pm) with Grant McCann’s men looking to build on the 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers ahead of the international break.

A brace from Jonson Clarke-Harris and a superb strike from Jack Marriott secured all three points against the Hoops, while Boro will hope to take the positives from their Emirates FA Cup run and end the campaign strongly with a play-off spot very much in their sights.

TEAM NEWS

Posh are without the services of Dan Butler, Nathan Thompson and Joel Randall to injury and this week have lost the services of on-loan goalkeeper Steven Benda who has broken a finger in training and been ruled out for four weeks.

Ronnie Edwards played twice for England under 19s over the international break, but has now tested positive for Covid-19 and is unlikely to recover in time for the game. Kyle Barker is also on the treatment table and has tested positive for the virus while Oliver Norburn has been sent for a scan on a knee injury sustained on international duty.

Ricky-Jade Jones has returned to training after a shoulder injury, while Clarke-Harris has completed the concussion protocols and recovered from a dead leg. Middlesbrough are expected to go into the game with no fresh injury worries with Aaron Connolly expected to lead the line.

FROM THE GAFFER

“I have a lot of respect for Chris Wilder. He did a wonderful job at Sheffield United and he is already getting his ideas across at Middlesbrough. They play in a similar style, they like to get their wing-backs high and they want their centre backs to join in. I watched them against Birmingham a few weeks back and they are a strong side, but it will be two teams going at it, both teams have got plenty to play for and that should make a good game,” McCann said.

Beyond Our Wilderest Dreams:
Messiah.png

"There was a lot of talk..." from Managers in the Championship that there were a lot of tired bodies and minds before the International Break. Chris Wilder said "modern footballers are fortunate" to have the break and maximise the opportunity to recover.

"From a health point of view....we have a fully fit squad". Wilder also gave credit to medical staff who have worked hard with the players to maintain their fitness: Martin Payero could be back in 10 days time from his injury(y) Chris wasa also very pleased that our lads on International Duty have returned with no injuries.

"You dont get where you are without the will to win..". Being at the bottom doesnt mean there`s nothing to fight for: "there isnt a kind fixture list". "Im not surprised [Pbro] have picked up some good points". Chris has known Grant McCann for some time and believes he will do well at Posh - but [the game tomorrow] "its going to be one of nine new challenges"!

The end of the season goes very quickly: "we are right in the mix". It is what it is - "we are still involved in the fight". We are one of the 4 from 10 in the Championship. "I believe we will get the job done and be in the shake up at the end of the season". No doubt there then folks.

"I do look at the personality of the group. The feeling around the club. The crowd are making it as easy as it can be....for the players". The coaching staff have got experience of promotion and they will help players through the next six weeks.

"Its up to the players". "They got us in this position"....."We are here to help, advise and push". "I dont see players changing their attitude to the game....we are in a great position".

Chris believes there is always a bit more pressure when players play for Middlesbrough. He says "Im not being arrogant when I say that". Every player is playing with "a light shirt" - there is no pressure on them. They are all playing with confidence.

"When I got appointed......however long ago that was...we would have taken this position [we are in today]. In other words - Chris Wilder waited until he assessed the side before he set a realistic target. Says a lot about where he an his Management team started.

Ballogan: "I believe we are seeing signs....we went with two young players who hadnt played much football......Lee Carlsley got back to me.." and got back to Chris about how "Flo" is really enjoying his football at the Boro(y)

Connolly and Balogan: "Its great to see players taking on the challenge....moving up north....a culture shock and moving into a new environment". Chris has high hopes for both lads. When they go back - "in late May rather than early May" [Play-offs Chris?] they will have learnt a lot.

"We`ve five good forwards" and its great to see the likes of Josh Coburn doing well.

Regards the last nine games: "Consistency is the key". "We have an opportunity to flip it around"[change players] as the season comes to its end.

"I feel excitement about the place. I feel we`re a club all in it together".

For the Fans:
"We have to produce a performance"... for them to get right behind us.

"We have a mighty following who can only inspire us".

UP THE MIGHTY BORO(y)

Don’t understand Connolly starting again ahead of our other strikers. Hope he proves me wrong but that partnership does not work

It was an own goal. Don’t care if it was given to him, it was in off the defender

It was given to him, so he scored.

Coburn should be given a solid half hour today, but I don't have any issue with a goalscorer keeping his place.
