The Masterplan - Room for Payero?

Kieran Scott quite rightly said he needed to have a vision for how Middlesbrough would look and how the management team would want the team to look.
I've said before I think we have a very solid base from which to build off.. at least two good players for every position and a squad that resembles something closer to Bryan Robson's and Steve McClarens than one we have seen in many years.

How would one go about building a team out of the players we have brought in, bringing in and have been closely linked too.. Ethan Galbraith the only player that has formerly bowed out of the Middlesbrough project.. patience being a virtue and obviously requiring the drive to move past quality players that are comfortably starting.

Could this mean there is a spot for Payero? Is that why nothing came of the Galbraith deal? From what very little i've seen of him he looks like a future Jonny Howson.. but then Payero's stats were close to Howson's and much like Hackney he seemed to pick up a few tricks from the master before he went out on loan. Bigger, faster, stronger... a very clear route to the premier league is potentially on the cards there for Marty P

Payero is a typical number 8, box to box player, he is more Hayden Hackney than Jonny Howson. He is a decent dead ball man from when I saw him in Argentina lites, better going forward than back. He could fill in at 10 too as we know.

It is all about his head and where it wants to be. His contract runs out next year (unless we have an additional one year option). I’d like to see the project through, but I doubt we will and we’ll probably look to get a fee somehow, even if its a loan.

The old double 8

I think Hackney and Payero could work very well together.. I do think he will be off tho.

I would think Carrick could get a tune out of Payero but it’s whether Payero wants that. Given he is in the last year of his contract and hasn’t settled in England it would be folly to invest a lot of time in him. Why make him into a £10m player for him to go for nothing next year. I also dont see who he gets in in front of.

Oh I’m sure they could, especially with the right defenders in behind. To be fair the Howson we bought was an 8, it is age that has changed how we play him as more of a sitter these days, although he does still forage upfield at times.

I can see Payero attracting plenty of interest from Europe if we got a decent season out of him, we would need that year option in place though otherwise we have no option but to find a fee from somewhere.

Dieng unlikely according to Dom Shaw, Tom Glover new number one target
I have a thing about keepers more than any other position. I know I am in the minority on this board, but, for me, the keeper is the most important position in the team, more so given our new style. (some of the dross we have had to witness and goals conceded should really drill home why I believe that).

As we all know, It is an incredibly specialist position, it isn’t just about making saves, a good team will have a keeper who can play, command an area, smell danger before it happens, see opportunity in possession, have lightning reactions, agility, be an organiser, a leader etc etc. to have all that at 25 in 102 first team Aussie league games is a big ask. I believe our spine needs to be experienced enough at our level. the keeper is the foundation of the spine and needs to be experienced I don’t readily see that in Glover from his CV.

That said Schwarzer is the perfect example to ah but….. I get that and I am sure due diligence will have been applied. We seem well down the list on goalkeepers. Steffen, Darlow and Trafford too expensive, Dieng a no go (seemingly). I would have tested Plymouths resolve on Cooper, but their promotion probably scuppers that along with 2 years on his contract. I would personally look to Rodak at Fulham or Travers at Bournemouth (loan), maybe Bachmann at Watford who are proven in this league at least, Rodak and Bachmann only have 1 year left under contract. Just my top of my head view.
