The Marvel Stuff

I've never been a fan of those comic films, but my youngest worked on Black Widow so I thought I ought to give it a go.. I really enjoyed BW, so watched the Avengers films in order. They were so/so but OK

So I have gone for Disney's 'in timeline order', and started watching them all. I'm not sure the timeline quite works but have quite enjoyed them so far. Just finished Iron Man 3 and thought it was the best of all 3 IM's

Captain America, Winter Soldier next which should be good. But then it's Guardians of the Galaxy stuff. I'll just miss those two out
Guardians in the galaxy are actually some of the better marvel films

I've watched quite a few of them but am in no way as geeky about it as I am with Star Wars. I liked the Iron Man ones, GotG and the last Spiderman one. Went to see Thor Love and Thunder last week with my daughter and I thought I was watching a comedy film for the first half. Russel Crowe's appearance was amusing and I didn't even realise Christian Bale was in it until the credits came up!

Thor Ragnarok is my favourite so far. Definitely the funniest.

"I really wish I had my hammer."
"Hammer?"
"Quite unique. It was made from this special metal from the heart of a dying star. And when I spun it really, really fast it gave me the ability to fly."
"You rode a hammer?"
"No, I didn’t ride the hammer."
"The hammer rode you on your back?"
"No. I used to spin it really fast, and it would pull me off the..."
"Oh, my God. The hammer pulled you off?"
"The ground. It would pull me off the ground, up into the air, and I would fly. Every time I threw it, it would always come back to me."
"Sounds like you had a pretty special and intimate relationship with this hammer"

Agree, I like the director.

I think that's what they do well in terms of varying the tone; super hero movie as comedy; super hero movie as spy drama; super hero movie as war film; super hero as high school coming of age movie...

I quite like the Batman films, but they're all grim monotone, and each re-boot seems determined to be darker than the last. Marvel doesn't tie itself to any particular tone or style.

I'm not really bothered by DC films but if I had to hold one superhero movie as the very best of that genre then it would be Dark knight, it manages to rachet up the tension and anticipation that no other movie of this genre has come close to, there is a scene in where the lorries and the security van are in a chase where they don't use music to enhance your emotions it is just raw chase footage which felt fresh and powerful

It's a good film, but one that causes problems as the basis of a franchise. I feel that DC have boxed themselves into a corner with their gritty tone.

MArvel do films that are eseentially comedies, and others with serious issues at their heart, such as Winter Solider, Black Panther and even Infinity War.

I agree but DN feels a bit special, maybe through the sheer force of Heath Ledger performance but I couldnt watch a series of movies with that tone it would feel bleak after a while. The Robert Patterson Batman felt like a kop out with more clearly defined good and bad and traditional role playing by male and female actors, but was sold as a darker movie, imo they are resigning the bleakness in and giving it more clearly defined roles, which felt like a step back but I understand why they have done it as they intend to do a franchise of related characters out of this movie.

I don't think they intended to do the whole marvel world building thing when they made the Nolan batman movies. Thought they were always intended to be standalone?

Stronger films for it in my opinion and doubtful they'd have got Nolan (and Bale) onboard otherwise. Nolan had pretty much free reign to make the films he wanted without having to worry about setting stuff up for a wider universe.

Some interesting takes on here. Looks like I really need to watch the GotG films. Just finished Captain America, Winter Soldier (which I really enjoyed) so they're up next in the timeline

first went to see Ragnarok and have been hooked ever since, along with the kids. phase 4 has been a bit under par but they are setting a lot up for the future I'm sure.

GotG1 is very good, GotG2 not so.

The vast majority of the films really benefit from re-watches, especially after seeing the later ones.
