The Johnny Manziel doc on Netflix

I’ve just watched it and it shows how a young talent with the world at his feet can still go horribly wrong.

The footage of the crowds that watched him at college for Texas A&M was crazy.

I haven’t watched it but remember the hype when he came into the league. Must do something to these young guys when they are hero worshipped from such a young age by so many.
Will add it to my watchlist!

It’s really good and he is open and honest in it it’s real warts and all expose. About his drinking drug taking gambling and how he basically ***ed his nfl life up the wall.

Adidas sold out of his shirt and the university made something akin to 700 mil in sponsorship and publicity but due to the NCAA rules he never made a penny ( legally).

I will watch it. I've just watched the Quarterback documentary on Netflix following Mahomes, Cousins and Mariota through last season. Enjoyed that one.

I haven't watched many drafts live but I remember watching the Manziel one. He had a lot of hype and he seemed to get way ahead of himself with the whole Jonny Football persona. It's a shame because he was electric at Texas. I think him failing to live up to his hype is what stopped me really following the draft each year because it's rare you get instant impact from draftees, especially at QB.

I'd love to go to a College football game. Looks great.

Just watched this on your recommendation and I really enjoyed it. Thanks! I'm not a big watcher of American sports, but I love sports documentaries and getting an insight into elite sports people. As I said, I'm not an expert but the clips of him playing in college were something else! He was a rock star - Johnny Football! The kind of person who can transcend a sport - just a shame that he didn't have the psychological tools to fulfil his talent. He could have been Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong (!) - a crossover personality.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. As with Nano I too watched his draft and it was almost comical in the end how it was so obvious how he was being overlooked. As you say many thought not only would he go rnd 1 but he’d go 1st overall and it never quite worked out.

He was a complete phenomenon as a kid with the Johnny football tag 75 touch downs in a season he was incredible and really should have been what mahomes is now as the talent was beyond doubt but sadly the aptitude and mentality was missing.

I think he put it best himself. He wasn't a professional athlete, he was a frat boy. It seems that by the time of the draft - most of the NFL teams had figured this out too.

Yeah, I was thinking of the comparison to Mahomes. Maybe a mix of Mahomes and Happy Gilmore!

Have to watch this👍

"Jonny Football" just had the wrong attitude and mentality, thought he had made it day 1 when in fact that was just the beginning. The top players work their ars*es off to make it, he partied.

Not the first, won't be the last. Pretty spectacular how the wheels fell off so quickly 😬

Watched this last night after seeing this thread, Really enjoyed it. Quite a story. I knew snippets as a result of his NFL days but didn't know the full back story. Definitely recommend this and at 72 mins long its watchable on a whim.

Same, watched it last night.

Thought I knew the backstory but very revealing about his struggles with the NFL and being a pro. Certainly looks like depression/mental health issues wrecked his career. Sad really.

Great talent, but partied his career away. The bit about getting coked up 1 week before the combine was a shocker 😳😳
