The importance of the modern full back

Few years ago it was just another defensive position, there to try to boot the opposing left/right winger off the pitch.

Now, probably heavily inspired by Pep, this has become a very important role. Up and down the pitch, defends, attacks, sets up goals. Needs skill, awareness and be fit as chuff. A combined defender and winger.

The difference having two good FBs is immense......and today we saw one of the reasons we are struggling. No disrespect to McNair or Coulson, tried their best bless them, but neither are good enough to play that position to the standard we need.

Looking forward to seeing what Engels can do.....and also wouldn't be unhappy to bring an experienced RB in. Will make a huge difference to the team.

A few years ago?

50+ perhaps, even at the Boro.

McNair and Coulson are poor, that's the problem. Both temporary stand ins. Smith and Dijksteel are both better on the right and hopefully the new bloke on the left is decent.
