The Holgate

It wasn't like that photo every game - that looks like Barnsley FAC in 1981 - Full house.

I agree great fun in a big game and it developed more with time by 1988/9 it was nearly all lads aged 14-25 and became a seathing mass - I was over in the East End Seats for the Gazza mars bar match against Spurs and after Colin Cooper's 25 yeard screamer went in the whole covered section of the Holgate (4,500 young blokes) was a seathing mass of heads and arms.

Early 81 saw 3 home crowds of 35k plus in a short period.
Never to be repeated as safety rules came in and restricted capacity for AP.
Also a huge dip in performance in the immediate seasons after that.

I used to stand in there from 82 to 86, it could be empty at a lot of matches but if Leeds, Newcastle or Chelsea rolled up then the centre would be packed, from 86 I would mix it up and go into different parts of AP, my favourite non Holgate area was the end of the South Terrace next to the away fans, but that only lasted until about 88 when the club had enough of the shenanigans that used to go on in there. I eventually got a season ticket in the Holgate in the last season at AP just to make sure I got a ticket for the last game at AP, which is why lots of people get season tickets to make sure they don't miss out on the big matches which is the same as the priority points ' scandal'.
