The high press…

We were doing this so well last season, then teams started to counteract it…

we saw today how effective it was when west brom did it to us, we couldn’t get the ball moving…

we managed to start getting behind them then bag, they high pressed and hit the goal, all be it from a soft foul…

we started high pressing and looked like getting back into the game…

it needs to be our main feature again, but we do need to sort out our defensive frailties first..

Definitely need to look defensively, back to basics, a clean sheet would be nice, but a win bouncing off someone's backside would do to start with.

Btw when does the transfer window close ?

Impressed to depressed..

Pressing is a collective action that defines how, why, and when a team looks to close down en masse.
Where is the ‘press’ how many are we using? What are the triggers? What are the traps?
We’re not pressing high throughout the game.. the intensity is no where near where it needs to be.. we don’t even fall back into a regimented formation

What should we do immediately after losing possession? What do we do to counter the counterattack?

Sometimes I think that some fans (and commentators) treat ‘the press’ as a singular magic object that only one team can possess in any one game.

We just need to wheel our ‘press’ out for the next game.. then victory will be ours!

I’m not suggesting it’s the magic answer, just stating we used it well and effectively most games last season..

then we didn’t… we need to use it more

I think the point newy is making is that lots of teams play like this, especially nowadays, and we probably haven’t deliberately stopped doing it. If we haven’t deliberately stopped, that means it’s hard to deliberately start again. It’s a bit like saying “we just need to finish better, it worked last season so why don’t we go back to finishing well this Saturday”.

Confidence is low, has been since even before the play-offs. Carrick’s job is to work out why and bring it back.

Watching the training videos from last week, the words being said constantly were "centre press" by the coaching staff. Whatever that means

This season our defence are less confident when pressed. I think Stefan was key to our get-out when teams tried to press us, cos his long kicking was accurate.
Smith is less confident having been injured
McNair is less confident having transfer listed
RVDB hasn’t played for us before
Engle hasn’t played for us before
Fry is a fanny
Lenihan is not four men

I think our issue is our press in deeper positions, never mind a high press.

We're great at playing through it when other teams employ a high press, which most do nowadays.

But we've been poor ar pressing in the defensive areas of the pitch this season.
