Dubbed by Banfied fans as 'La Cabra Dorada' (the golden goat) Martín Payero has been busy covering almost every blade of grass week in, week out, with a wyscout heat map looking more like a Chinese flag than a football pitch.

For all the comparisons that have been bestowed upon Martin Payero including boro's nearly man N'Golo Kanté 'the Argentinian Steven Gerrard' seems to be the best fit, this is by no means paper and fluff both River Plate and Boca Juniors have both had their heads turned by this young man, after almost single handily dragging perennial underdogs Banfield through the Copa Diego Maradona to within a penalty shoot out of adding to their solitary top-flight honor.

No player in Argentina’s top flight has completed as many dribbles (11.09 per 90) or made as many progressive runs (4.86 per 90) as Payero and this athleticism, rather than trickery and skill, is what drives Banfield forward. It’s presumably this energy that has saw River Plate linked with the 22-year-old when looking for someone to fill the gap left by Exequiel Palacios.

Yet for all of that industry, no other players have contributed more for Banfield in front of goal. Payero, leading the league for assists (7) and direct goal contributions during the Copa Diego Maradona; Galoppo with five goals in 12 games during the same run and three goals in five in the current campaign. Eight goals in fifteen appearances from central midfield and who has assisted five of them? Payero. (he tends to check his runs to around the edge of the box or wide areas and then deliver the passes)

'The Golden Goat' an outstanding box to box midfielder averages around six recoveries per 90 minutes with over half coming in the opponent’s half. Aggressively pressing up the pitch to win the ball high up the pitch, marauding forward in support of the attack looking to make an impact around the penalty box, to find the wide players early and ultimately to fashion chances for the center-forward, good passing? Great passing and unbelievable set-piece delivery.

Our hopes were raised last season when by some miracle Neil Warnock had fashioned a play off team out of one doomed for League One, transfer mishaps and last minute gambles in January petered out leaving us in a respectable but somehow disappointing 10th place, The signings we are making right now are very much worthy of getting excited about.

Don't scream out for lower league gems and then whine when we get them, don't ask for bargain basement strikers who will destroy defenders and then cry because we didn't splash the cash on a has been.. we have a plan!

Anyone who wished and prayed for that unknown South American N'Golo Kante.. YOU'RE WELCOME x
