Only just come back from a battering against Millwall and its time to go again. Millwall - a point well earned. The first point in the last 5 away games. Lets hope it is a sign of positive results to come. Results elsewhere were unpredictable - as is usual in the Championship: Coventry got a good win and the invincible Sheffield United were on the receiving end of a 4-1 drubbing. Now they know what it feels like!

Luton got beat today at Kenilworth Road [Sunday]. We are still in the mix - so lets keep our nerve, pray that we start scoring [dont care who] and win a few more vital games. Birmingham are a fragile team, prone to collapse if they go behind. As well as a fragile ground - parts of which are currently closed off due to corroding steel and asbestos - they havent seen the Hong Kong owners very often - and there`s big problems off-field. Thats us beaten 3-1 then!!??;)

Seriously, we can get the three points doing what we did against Luton and Millwall - work hard as a unit and get that ball in the onion bag. A bit quicker taking chances and less passing the ball out wide in a semi-circle around the opposition goal! Tav is due his third of the season. Jones needs to oil his roller-skates and the boys on loan from darn sarf need to get their scoring boots on. If the worse happens - we can rely on Joe Lumley to come out of his area for a corner at the other end - and do a "Jimmy Glass"(y)

Lee Bowyer Reaction to Blues 0-0 against Hull:
1647207732111.png

Lee Bowyer was able to take the positives after his side were held at home by Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Blues came closest to scoring on Saturday afternoon and had the better of a hard-fought contest in the Second City, with Lyle Taylor seeing a header cleared off the line and a number of inviting Onel Hernandez crosses having everything but a final touch.

But building on last weekend’s win at Bristol City was the aim and the hosts achieved that without too many scares to record a first shutout in exactly a month as the Boss chalked up his 50th game in charge.

Assessing the meeting against the Tigers, the Head Coach spoke honestly about his players’ display and what prevented them from taking the maximum whilst highlighting the plus points.

He told the media: “[It was] not very pretty. Two groups of honest lads working hard but the quality wasn’t there for both teams today. It disappointed me because we had some good players out there today.

“There’s no excuse. We got into some good positions, especially second-half. We can improve on that side of things, create and score more goals. They are human beings and they can’t be perfect all the time. Too many had off days.

“There are positives, we didn’t lose, and we kept a clean sheet.”

[Easily pleased then?]

Lee Bowyer opens up about Birmingham City's interest in Onel Hernandez

The 29-year-old has been a big hit with Blues fans following his move from Norwich City
1647208195006.png
Lee Bowyer says Onel Hernandez is loving his time at Birmingham City and that the club will speak to Norwich City about a return to St Andrew’s.

The Cuban has electrified Blues ’ team since cutting short his loan with Middlesbrough and arriving at Blues.

He has scored three goals, added two assists and provided the kind of incisive attacking performances supporters haven’t seen for a long time.
OH1.png
He has done so in a variety of positions, from wing back to striker and all across midfield, giving Bowyer the kind of tactical flexibility he craves.

Fans have also taken to Hernandez and the appetite for him to stay at Blues has grown - an appetite Bowyer shares.

“I don’t know [the prospect of getting him back] the one thing I do know is Onel loves it here,” the head coach said.

“I have had a few conversations with him and he is really enjoying it.
OH2.jpg
“Onel is one of those people you need to put your arm round, tell them you love them and let them play.

“If you keep the reins on him then he is not going to be the same player.

“It’s obviously something that is going to be out of my control but there will be a discussion between the two clubs in the summer. If we can find a way I am sure we will.

“He is going to get better, I am working with him all the time to try and improve that last little bit in the final third and once it sinks in – which it is – and he get into those situations he is going to get even better.

“He is a good player now but I believe there is even more to come.”

Hernandez started well at Boro but dropped down the pecking order when Chris Wilder replaced Neil Warnock.

Prior to that he spent the last three years at Norwich, with whom he has won two promotions before struggling for game time.

Mr Middlesbrough John Hickton scored our 1st too flight goal after 20 years when he vagged the 1st in a 3-0 win at St Andrews

My 1st Boro disappointment when Brum knocked us out of the FAC in 1975

Having both played out drab goalless draws on Saturday, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough go in search of goals and wins during Tuesday's Championship battle at St Andrew's.

Lee Bowyer's side shook hands on a point with fellow lower-half strugglers Hull City at the weekend, while Boro recorded a stalemate with playoff outsiders Millwall.

Barely anything could separate Birmingham and Hull City on the statistics front never mind the scoreline, as Bowyer's men failed to make it back-to-back wins in the Championship with a 0-0 draw against the Tigers, but danger is not imminent.

Bowyer refused to play the blame game after taking a point from Saturday's game, but the Birmingham boss did lament the state of the pitch after the full-time whistle, with this week's hosts almost home and dry with regards to second-tier survival.

The Blues' 19th-placed standing in the Championship table is far from satisfactory, but a 16-point chasm separates Bowyer's side from Barnsley below the dotted line, and only the most devastating of collapses would see Birmingham dragged into a relegation dogfight now.

A second successive home game without a goal in the Championship may come as a concern to Bowyer, and while Birmingham can almost afford to relax heading into the business end of the season, Middlesbrough travel to St Andrew's with plenty still to play for.

Demanding an immediate response from his side after former employers Sheffield United put four past them last week, Chris Wilder's Boro shored up at the back against Millwall, but a lack of ruthlessness prevented them from keeping pace with the playoff-chasing pack.

Wilder's side did at least manage to end an abysmal streak of three successive away defeats at The Den, and the Boro boss was pleased to see his side give as good as they got on the physical front, with Millwall not exactly renowned for a welcoming nature on their own turf.

However, a second game without victory sees Middlesbrough plop themselves down in eighth in the table - just one point adrift of Sheffield United in the final playoff place - so the importance of picking up a first league victory on the road since December cannot be understated.

Wilder will certainly view a clean sheet against Millwall as a cause for optimism given that his men had shipped 11 goals in their last four road matches in the second tier, but it was a Halloween horror show for Boro against Birmingham at the Riverside back in October as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat.

Team News

Birmingham did not pick up any fresh injury concerns in the recent draw with Hull, with Teden Mengi fit enough to take his place on the bench after recovering from a hamstring issue.

However, Jeremie Bela was absent from the squad to face the Tigers due to illness, while Troy Deeney and George Friend are keeping Maxime Colin company in the treatment room, but the latter is edging closer towards a return.

It would be a surprise to see Bowyer ring the changes after a resolute showing at the weekend, but Scott Hogan could provide an alternative option in the final third ahead of Lyle Taylor.

As far as Middlesbrough are concerned, Wilder will hope to have Anfernee Dijksteel back at his disposal after an illness, while Riley McGree and Martin Payero remain out with groin and ankle issues respectively.

Dijksteel may not make an immediate return to the rearguard, though, with the visiting coach possibly prepared to stick with the Lee Peltier-Dael Fry-Paddy McNair combination after a shut-out at The Den.

Wilder will need to assess the fitnesses of his crop after making just one change on Saturday, but an unchanged lineup could see Premier League loanees Aaron Connolly and Folarin Balogun form their partnership up top.

Birmingham City possible starting lineup:
Etheridge; Pedersen, Roberts, Gordon; Graham, Woods, Bacuna, Gardner, Hernandez; Hogan, Chong

Middlesbrough possible starting lineup:
Lumley; Peltier, Fry, McNair; Jones, Tavernier, Howson, Crooks, Taylor; Balogun, Connolly

SM words green background

We say: Birmingham City 0-1 Middlesbrough

Bowyer will not want to see any complacency creep in as Birmingham seek to consolidate their second-tier status, and Middlesbrough's away form is nothing to write home about.

The visitors are still in a strong position when it comes to the playoff race and have the youthful talent up top primed to make a difference, so we are backing Boro to return to winning ways.

Boro welcomed Blues to the Riverside back in the 2014 / 15 season >>>

THIS weekend Boro welcome Birmingham to the Riverside for our opening fixture of the 2014/15 Sky Bet Championship season, marking the start of Aitor Karanka's first full campaign in charge.

Birmingham have arguably been a bit of a bogey team for us in the past, and the history books point that way too. That's because we've played the Blues 107 times, with us winning 31, drawing 32 and losing 44.

Our first ever meeting came in the 1899/1900 season which was then the old English Second Division. Birmingham took six points off us that season as we lost 1-3 at home, and then 5-1 away.

We actually only picked up our first ever points against Birmingham in 1903, when we won 3-1 at home in the old English First Division.

Recent years haven't been so great either, with perhaps the most memorable loss to the Blues coming in the form of the 3-2 defeat in 2012.

That November fixture saw ex-Boro striker, Marlon King, score two goals as he bagged Birmingham all three points at St Andrews, after Boro had twice led in that game.

However, since then, Birmingham had a sizeable changeover at the end of last season, with 18 players leaving the club, and nine being brought in - all without commanding a fee - including Boro Academy product and ex-left-back, Jonathan Grounds.

Birmingham did experience a somewhat rocky campaign last season as they finished one spot above the relegation zone in 21st position, and indeed only preserved their Championship status on a nerve jangling final afternoon at Bolton.

Plus, Boro took four points from the Blues, with one of those games being arguably a stand out fixture for both sides, as two wonder goals were scored at the Riverside that day.

Boro went 1-0 up through Danny Graham and just two minutes later Jacob Butterfield made it 2-0, when he scored what turned out to be our goal of the season, as voted for by the fans.

Things got even more interesting as the Blues pulled one back before half-time from a stunning 40-yard Emyr Huws strike.

Birmingham had actually closed the voting for goal of the season on their official website, but chose to reopen the poll after Huws' outstanding goal, which of course, ended up being their goal of the season too.

Both teams proceeded to go at it hammer and tongs, producing the most dramatic final 10 minutes of a game in the entire 2013/2014 Championship campaign.

Kenneth Omeruo was shown a red card, and Ben Gibson followed him off to take an early bath receiving his second yellow five minutes later. But Lee Tomlin stepped up and sealed it for Boro scoring in the 89th minute to make it 3-1.

Chris Wilder reacts as Middlesbrough players respond to his challenge at Millwall

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder praised his side’s response to Tuesday’s defeat to Sheffield United after their goalless draw with Millwall at the Den.

1647209315787.png
Both sides had chances to win the game in a competitive affair between two sides chasing the play-offs, but neither could find the all-important breakthrough and both had to settle for a point.

The draw leaves Middlesbrough just one point off the play-offs, while hosts Millwall are just three short.

“We asked the question to the players because it was unacceptable what happened on Tuesday night, and they produced a response,” said Wilder.

“They’ve answered our questions at arguably the toughest of places, where they do ask the question everywhere – behind the dugout, in the stands, on the pitch.”
1647209477864.png
Millwall came into the game on a strong run of form with just one loss in eight, but Boro boss Wilder was pleased with how his players rose to the challenge posed by the London club.

He said: “They’re on a fabulous run, and they’re a really competitive side, and if you’re weak mentally or physically, they’ll run over the top of you. We weren’t.

“We put in some great challenges, and in a perverse way, I really enjoy coming here because I think it’s a real test of what you’re about as a professional.

“It’s an intimidating atmosphere. It always is a tough place to come. You’re coming to the business end of the season. They’re in the mix, and we’re in the mix too with that result.”
1647209495819.png
Both sides struck in the crossbar in a hard-fought encounter, first Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier striking a free-kick against the upright before Millwall defender Murray Wallace headed against the bar.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett felt that the goalless nature of the game was not reflective of the chances each side had throughout the 90 minutes, but that a draw was a fair result.

He said: “I thought it was a really competitive game. A 0-0 probably wasn’t a fair reflection of the match, there were plenty of moments in both boxes to keep you on your toes.

On this day in 2011: League Cup final Blues for Arsenal

Arsenal went into the final as red-hot favourites as they attempted to end their six-year wait for a trophy.

In the event, it was Birmingham striker Obafemi Martins who stole the headlines with a last-gasp winner which sent the silverware to St Andrews instead.

The Gunners arrived at Wembley sitting in second place in the Premier League table and few gave the lowly Blues much chance of upsetting the odds in advance.

However, they set out their stall from the off and although they needed the help of a catastrophic error to seal their triumph, few could argue with the outcome.

Alex McLeish’s men might have got off to the perfect start when midfielder Lee Bowyer was felled as he rounded keeper Wojciech Szczesny, a foul which would have resulted in a second-minute penalty and the Poland international’s dismissal had a questionable offside flag not handed him a reprieve.

Unbowed, they took a 28th-minute lead through Nikola Zigic’s header and although Robin van Persie levelled before the break, they were not to be denied.

As the clock ticked down towards the final minute, a mix-up between Szczesny and defender Laurent Koscielny allowed Nigeria international striker Martins to fire into an empty net to secure a famous 2-1 victory.

The joy of that day was tempered three months later when Birmingham slipped out of the top flight after winning just two of their remaining 12 league games.

Arsenal’s disappointment was compounded when they were knocked out of both the Champions League and the FA Cup by Barcelona and Manchester United respectively before finishing in fourth place in the league.

Just in case you didnt know: Boro have sold out all the tickets for the FA Cup match at The Riverside on Saturday 19th March. At the time of writing I cannot find anything reliable which gives any indication of how many Chelsea sold before the sanctions on their owner, or what effect that may have on tickets being made available for more home fans?
Keep your eyes and peeled

Tickets for Boro's Emirates FA Cup quarter-final match against Chelsea at the Riverside have now sold out.

The match is a 5.15pm kick-off on Saturday 19 March.

The remaining tickets went on sale to supporters with 11 or more Priority Points earlier this evening, and were quickly snapped up.

It's a second successive home sell-out for an Emirates FA Cup match at the Riverside after a capacity crowd watched Boro's extra-time win over Spurs in the last 16.
