[ "It's nearly half-time! I think we better leave before the Boro score again…."!]

Today's match [Sunday 4th February 2024] is “just another game” and any mentions of it being a “derby” are just stretching the imagination and sports-writer talk. It's certainly a game we have played more than against our other near neighbours – the Magpies. That's probably because they have spent more time in the top flight, but the Mackems have missed out recently, due to spending four or five seasons in the Third Division.

Their recent thumping by the Toon was their “Cup Final”, which gauged where they are in the scale of 1 to 10, in terms of player quality. But not to worry about why they spend hours denying we are in any way “rivals”. It's not surprising really: they tend to leave the Riverside with no points, and we turn up at theirs and give them a lesson in how to play the beautiful game.

Over the years, we've exchanged some good, and not-so-good players and Managers: Cloughie is the first who springs to mind. A unique player in his day – prolific striker with an eye for goal and tremendous skill on the ball. It was unfortunate that his skills weren't on display for too long at Roker Park – when that injury prematurely ended his career. There was ex-Sunderland man Raich Carter, who did relatively well at Roker Park, but was a disaster when he took over at the Boro. In more recent years, we've turned Sunderland failures into Boro stars, notably Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore.

The latter was dumped on the scrapheap by the Deck Chairs and nurtured back to fitness with the help of a certain Neil Warnock`s encouragement. Let's not forget Sunlun`s most recent successful Manager, Tony Mowbray, whose appointment was derided by certain sections of their fans for being a “Smoggy” [no rivalry there then]. As a Boro fan, it didn’t quite look right, seeing our Boro legend wearing that silly scarf in the dug-out at their place!

More recently, we have recruited youngsters from the area, such as Jack Paterson [Sunderland], Addis Dore [Washington], Ethan Scott [Hetton-le-Hole], Cain Sykes [south Hetton], and Sonny Finch [Houghton le Spring] and, many more.

Our Recruitment Team and the Academy have an eye for talent, which is a good investment for the next generation of home-grown talent. It's good to know we are building solid foundations for the future. Some of our lads will move on; it's inevitable in football. Every player has their chance, but it's often about being in the right time at the right place and having the right Manager and coaches.

Back to today. We welcome our [NOT] our “Rivals” from up the road, who are enjoying their second season in the Championship, after previously enduring four years in the Third Tier of English football.

Since they last graced our presence in our 4-0 thumping of them at their place, the Black Cats have changed Managers [yet again]: sacking Tony Mowbray, being 6th in the table at the time, and replacing them with former Rangers First Team Coach and QPR Manager, Michael Beale. It seemed odd that Mowbray got them to the Play-offs in their first season back into the Championship and, built an attractive young footballing side, but was replaced by a Manager yet to win-over sceptical Sunderland fans.

Currently, three points above us [43 / 7th] we are in 11th place, but with a game-in-hand. We've scored two more than them[42], but our poor start has meant we have an inferior goal difference compared to them [+8 / +1]. They arrive today, just a point behind their newest “rivals” – Coventry City! Of course, at the time of writing, we don’t know what the other scores on Saturday may be and how this affects the Championship Table. Needless to say, league positions can change within minutes, and it's never all over until it's all over!

Hopefully, we can give the Mackem`s another lesson in how to play effective attacking, winning football, like we did back in October. We may have lost Morgan Rogers to Aston Villa [a shrewd bit of business, that], but stalwart Alex Pritchard has departed to join former Manager Tony Mowbray at Birmingham City. Having been fortunate to hang on to Jack Clarke [at the time of writing], they have signed Romaine Mundle for a reported £2M from Standard Liege and defender Leo Hjelde.

Come On Boro! (y)

“We certainly feel there are enough goals throughout the team to make the difference”.

On Morgan Rogers: “we`de have loved to have kept him and worked with him and, see how good he could become. But, sometimes that’s football, you know. We move on, just as Morgan will, but certainly, we wish him all the best. I hope he fulfill’s all the potential that he's got.”

Michael Carrick at his recent Media conference was keen to stress how he feels the current squad is ready to push on to the next "chapter” in the season. Now the January Transfer window is closed, it's about utilizing the strengths of the squad. It's also time to welcome back those away on International duty. Although we still have players such as Dieng, Latte Lath and Jones on the treatment table, things are looking up compared to the injury nightmare before Christmas.

The lads have had a break, to recharge their batteries, freshen up and prepare for the final stretch of this season. We are still only three points behind a play-off position, but there is a long way to go. Carrick said there was a “spark” and “freshness” about the players, whom he describes as being in a “good place”.

There was the inevitable question about the transfer of Morgan Rogers to Villa and the effect this might have on our squad. Carrick explained his thinking that Finn Azaz is a “like-for-like” replacement [suggesting the staff knew Morgan was likely to be on his way] He also commented that the departure of Callum Kavanagh was a step forward in his career.

1706914849129.png
Finn [Azaz] was obviously brought in, so that made us stronger going into that. In effect, Morgan [Rogers] is a like-for-like. Kav, obviously being a younger player….some younger players come through and are kind of able to get through to the first team and have the career [here] and, at other times, it's about making a career somewhere else. So we wish Kav all the best from every one at the club. It was nice for me to get him on the pitch and for him to have that experience and, now, he's gone on to develop and something new. Morgan was one of them….you take it as a one-off situation and every transfers different. It was one of those that kind of fit for everyone really in the end. So it is what it is. Mixed feelings in a way, because we were looking forward to kind of developing Morgan, but at the same time, [being] realistic to understand the situation for what it was. But, in terms of the squad, we're strong you know, we got good options, we got boys coming back fit and, we’re looking forward to the games coming up.

Praise for Boro Fans at Chelsea

It's Carricks first Tees-Wear Derby, and he's “really looking forward to it”, but he thinks the result back in October will have no bearing on the game or how the Boro squad approach it. It's a “good test” for our lads. Carrick praised our fans at Chelsea, even in defeat, saying if that atmosphere is transferred to The Riverside on Sunday, it will hopefully give us fans reason to celebrate and enjoy taking three points:

I look back to the support we had at Chelsea not so long ago…..but the support was incredible. The reaction they gave us at the end of the game after a defeat like that was pretty special. To bring that atmosphere and that level of support and noise….and for us to give them a little bit more to shout about, would be the ideal scenario.

[Luke Thomas celebrates with Youri Tielemans and James Maddison as Leicester beat Leeds 4-1 and send Foxes 2nd in the Premiership in the 20/21 season]

In some ways, it will be like a new team. A fresh star. Carrick will have options and cover for every position. We mustn't forget to welcome Luke Thomas, who has a lot of experience in the Premiership and will add quality to the squad.

Carrick. We have Goals in the Squad.

Carrick has no concerns about our ability to score and has the players to take us forward:

We feel that the players we have brought in we're really happy with and for good reason they're here. We've seen that already. But, certainly in forward areas, we're flexible. [The] boys can play across the forward line, we can mix it up a little bit in terms of positioning, which is good for us. We certainly feel there are enough goals throughout the team to make the difference.

Whether it's a “Derby” or not. Sunday is the next game, and we are up for it. For us more hardened fans, this game has always been a “Derby” and it's always had that extra edge and excitement. Oddly enough, the Deck Chairs appear to expend more time telling its “just another game” to them. But we welcome them to our hallowed shrine. We haven't painted the away concourse in Sunderland Colours or posted photo's of their victories against us since 1957 on the walls - because it would make the place look very empty.

We let Michael Carrick [Our favourite Geordie] have the last words:

It's all about what happens, who gets up out of bed early enough and prepares well enough [smile] for the early kick-off. We won't be looking too much into what's happened in the past. It's all about Sunday.!

We're upto page 10 of is it a derby on that other message board ...
It's not really a “derby”, we just call it that because we think we're important!
They don't call it a “derby” because they are crap!

Been stat looking and in the 70s when us and them were in a different division to the Mags we were the big game/draw of the season at Roker Park ...

So we must have meant something back then

70/71 av 18065 HI 42617 BORO low 8596 Swin
71/72 av 15849 HI 28129 BORO low 9749 Bham
72/73 av 22613 HI 26040 BORO low 11141 hull
73/74 av 24416 HI 41658 BORO low 8142 ports

Even the late 70s drew a crowd of 33205 and the 1980/81 fixture brought in 32745

Nothing of note for 10 years or so but the Davenport game in 91/92 saw a healthy Div2 attendance of 25098

The deckchairs three “forwards” have, so far this season, scored two goals between them!

I hope the break from the Chelsea thumping and maybe more improtantly the poor show against Rotherham will have made us better. If we play like we did vs rotherham we will get nothing against a decent Sunderland team. Jones, as frustrating as he can sometimes be, is our main creative player so we need others to step up, forss maybe.

Just looked what Sunlun have been doing away from home recently

sunlun2.png

The only player to score in any of those 9 is J.Clarke. 2 were pen's as well. You know Boro love to be available for other teams to break any of their bad stats runs. :(

Sat in a bar in Benidorm with a few Mackems. They all, unanimously, agree Tony should never have been sacked. They think, they’ll lose. I‘m telling them our home record lately is terrible. I think we are all preparing ourselves for the worst!
