The creation of the Universe and the possibility of a God.

I asked our mam who created god when I was little, she referred me to the vicar who waffled about faith, total rubbish exposed by a child

For 000’s of years there was little to no science and people saw tons of weird stuff happening that they didn’t and couldn’t understand. Not surprising they sought some kind of meaningful solution - and they did.

Looks to me like science is emerging from a period when scientists thought they had or would find all the answers to one where they now know more about how much they don't know and will never be able to explain.
 
my parents are proper bible bashers. My dad is an elder in the church they go to.

My question always is this

There is 100s of gods people believe in and believe theirs is the only one true god and everyone else is destined for eternal damnation in the fiery pits of hell. Whys are you so certain that yours is the one?

I also have this one which leads to me being accused of blasphemy.

If we all came from adam and eve wouldnt that make us all inbread and if the flood caused this to be wiped out then we must be doubly inbred because Noah and his sons must have been having some wild parties with their wives.

PS i attended the church until i was 16 when i left home to join the army. All it did was give me ammunition to question the mental theories and all i learnt whilst there was that christians are some of the most judgy and most horrible bitchy people around.

Religions have been around for thousands of years. For reasons of cohesion within the group, tribe and country. But mainly as means of social, and political control.

I agree with much of your post. I grew up in a church environment and my experience was that there are some people involved that should never be anywhere near vulnerable people, children and young adults - I don’t mean in a ‘wrong un’ way, but seeing how various friends were treated there are people absolutely unfit to have influence over individuals in their formative years or difficult periods. However, I also met some amazing people who are just utterly decent to their core and superb role models. This is applicable to any large groups of people though, just religion skews things somewhat.

I’m very much live and let live. But my main challenge with those that get a bit evangelical is for them to take the four gospels and read them side by side, look at the lineage of Jesus, the birth story, the Easter story and everything in between. Look at how the narrative changes when you get to the Gospel of John. Then look at the Acts of the Apostles. Then all the books/letters attributed to Paul. If you can justify all the blatant inconsistencies and downright contradictions and still think that it’s the word of God, then fair enough, he’s really one for testing that faith!

Someone earlier in the thread suggested we wouldn’t know if there was a god until we die, but who’s to say that a god would definitely create an afterlife?

If your want to envoke some theoretcial magical being existing, all the man made religions would still be 100% bull**** as it it is demonstrably proven , a fairytale written by illiterate cave dwelling jews a couple thousand
years ago as a tool to control women and poor people and to stop everybody going insane fearign a complete blackness and none existence at death, death is the same feeling you will have as you did 10 years before you
were born , or 50 years or 500 billion years, sweet FA

We 100% evolved and that's all there is to it, the magical sky wizard created the first pond goo is a different discussion

So, if you want to open up a conversation, then all currently existing religions have to be tossed into the skip where they all belong, it's insanity

And to be 100% clear, atheism is the rejection of the exitence of dieties, due to lack of evidence it is not a belief system, it's like saying the non collecting of stamps is a belief , a childish waste of everybody's time

Believing in a god and believing in religion are not the same thing and, certainly in the uk the vast majority of believers in the uk are not followers of a specific religious dogma. Look up letsism or diesm or even agnostic atheism.

The bible had a line in genesis that is clearly nonsense. On day one in the job he created light. It was day 4 when he created the stars. So, and you know where I am going with this, where did the light come from?
