THE BUDGET 2021

I realise that politics and economic policy especially is about compromises but there does seem to be a lot of very contradictory thinking going on, with this.

Not just young people - none of it makes up for what they've taken away over the last decade. Even the lower duty on draught beer only really helps the big brewers as it's only on containers over 40L, which is just over 9 gallons. A lot of smaller brewers and venues use 4½ gallon pins.
Agreed.

The last 11 years - in fact since 1979, has had nothing whatsoever with "balancing books" or "clearing debt" - its been an ideological attack on ordinary people, their quality of life and the right to dignity.

Its been a rolling back of the gains made in the 50`s, 60`s and 70`s.

Everything from the Sates assets, down to playing fields and the NHS have been sold off or given away at discount prices to global corporations and we have been ripped off.

Meanwhile, basic human rights and freedoms have been taken away whilst the state probes more and more into ordinary peoples lives.

The public have been conned and "blame" has been apportioned so much on the victims, that people repeat the propaganda without even thinking.

Any resistance is marginalised and labeled - whilst the foot-soldiers of racism and bigotry are wowed like fanning the flames - to protect the few from the many.

I hear the same tripe repeated, which I heard in the 70`s - and people dont think about it - they swallow it.

Not everyone is stupid and ignorant, but the mass media has beaten the public so hard and so much, it has made thinking a crime.

Just where will this end up?

The owner of a big Bar in London has just been on London News and spoke about the cut in duty on beers and sparkling wine.

Because of increases in VAT and the fact that the duty is only cut for barrels and kegs larger than 40 litres it wont see any reduction in beer prices. The trouble is many pubs only use 30 litre kegs because they are safer for staff to lift.

Asked whether prices at the punp will go down he said no. If anything they will vo up. Worth rememberring that when you see the inevitable tabloid headlines like "great news for the beer drinkers"

Will the prices of beer in supermarkets come down? Possibly but that doesn't help the hospitality industry.

Apparently, craft beers - from all those little bars and micro-breweries like Bedford Street - will have their costs and taxes going up.

Yes but isn't austerity just a different spin on prudence? At the end of the day COVID has cost a fortune - didn't track and trace alone cost something like £40bn?, furlough etc etc. Doesn't it make sense to rein in expenditure now?
Austerity has been pretty much debunked by most economists hasn't it, in very much the same way that Thatchers 'Trickle Down Economy' has been since it caused so much damage, both here and in the US.

For a government implementing austerity they're doing a lousy job.

If you want to attack the Johnson government, you're missing the target. First attack is on net inward migration - last year the second highest ever; Second is public sector borrowing - this year the highest since 1993 and one of the highest since World War II. About as far from traditional Tory as you can get.

Johnson wants to restructure the economy along neo-Marxist lines - "Build Back Better". Check out Mark Carneys book. Carney is one of Johnsons climate advisers. I wonder who really benefits in this new Chinese style capitalism. Trudeau and Biden have the same objective - and they're just about the most corrupt politicians on the planet.

Unfortunately your text points towards a flawed understanding of "Marxism" and its interpretation..

May I politely suggest the following:

"Das Kapital".

It provides a basic understanding of the main tenents of Marx`s interpretation of Capitalsim.(y)
You may find it useful as a reference book.

You may also find the following tract a useful, straight-forward, explanation of dialectical and historical materialism:

Ralph Milliband`s "The State in Capitalist Society" may also enrich your knowledge of how the State operates in Capitalist society.(y)

A budget ["along neo-Marxist lines"?? - your description] might have been more beneficial for the 6,000,000 disabled and vulnerable people - and the unpaid carers in our country - who werent even mentioned in yesterdays budget.

Equally, the 3,000,000 + children living in poverty would also have appreciated help with food on the table from multi-millionaire "Marxist" Richie Food-nick. Nothing.

You mention those nasty immigrants - as usual: well we have a huge shortage of workers to fill jobs in various supply chains.

There are over 60,000 unfilled NHS Vacancy`s and an acute shortage of carers and domestics. Many NHS vacancies require trained, qualified staff, who cant just be picked out of the population and placed in operating theatres or GP surgeries.

The farms in Lincolnshire, North Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, etc no longer have the labour which was once available pre-brexit.
There arent enough butchers or hands to work on turkey farms.

11 + years of "balancing the books" is horllix. Its a con. Its a lie. It has favoured the few at the expense of the many.

Happy reading.

Tax on bank profits down from 8% to 3%?

Yeah, that will help the workers.
It's only a reduction in the surcharge on bank profits, not a reduction in the tax on bank profits.

Smaller brewers will benefit from small producer relief and small brewey relief, as well as hospitality venue rate cuts, so there is some benefit for them.

In Sunak’s budget address yesterday he spent 5 1/2 minutes drooling over how he was going to save the average punter £12 a year on beer and wine (arguably it won’t anyway) but zero minutes on the huge tax burden he’s just wrapped on households first on social care levy and then the ending of triple lock pensions. Absolutely no mention whatsoever. Of course the reason for that is he had pre announced the bad news. Also it was earlier in the year that he froze tax thresholds until 2026 so that many more families are dragged higher tax brackets over the next 5 years.

The budget speech itself has been used by this Tory Government has become a bit of a PR con.
