The Black Stuff on tonight

I thought it was filmed on Marton Manor.
Edit
Just looked on IMD and it says Coulby Newham.

I watched them filming part of this near the bank that was on the corner of Albert Rd and Wilson St. I worked for Cleveland County council in Gurney House in those days. Went round the corner at lunchtime one day and they were all standing around there. Only one famous at that time was Michael Angelis because of his role in the Liver Birds. Most of the rest of them became faces as a result of follow up Boys from the Black Stuff. Excellent programmes.

It was Coulby but Coulby was only just getting built in those days, hence the building sites.

Norfolk - they were stood outside what became the Ayresome Park Pub in one scene in the play. A good view of the side of the Wellington pub was shown (the pub with the boxing ring above it). There used to be a lot of commercial banks around the Exchange building very close by when it was filmed in 1978. In the scene they just visited a bank to get their cash to buy the asphalt.

Some of the new bungalows looked like one my dad had in Coulby Newham (with the front door set back), but there were trees there in say 2004 when I visited and in the play it was wide open but it was 1978 when the play was made. Looking on the map at Sunnyside he lived 200m away but you would never recognise in the play if it wasn't for the design of the houses.

Look for "The Black Stuff" on IPlayer.
I imagine "Boys In The Black Stuff" is something else entirely.

O.P thanks for the recommendation, a great watch. Did anyone notice the tv personality who was in the que behind the lads at the motorway service station when they stopped for breakfast. I'm sure it was Jeremy Clarkson.
