Teesside Airport Rockcliffe Lounge

If they offer what I'm looking for at a reasonable price I'll use them, I'm not paying over the odds when there's two other local airports available to choose from.
Just chucking in an a-political view here........

Took the family to Turkey for a week in July. Had the choice of NCL (tui or Jet2) or LBA (Jet2). We have always flown from either of these previously, however this year we also had the option of MME (tui). Umm and arrghed about it for a while but ended up going for MME. And what a particularly pleasant surprise it was. The last time I'd flown from MME was about five/six years ago to catch a connecting flight in AMS. Facilities have been greatly improved since the days of the old manky counter with a twix (if you're lucky) and a vending machine (usually out of order) in the departure lounge. It was a 25 minute drive, convenient, car parking right next to the terminal and half the cost of NCL or LBA BTW, decent facilities for a small regional airport - comparisions to what you might get in larger hub airports are quite frankly ridiculous, no stress at all, straight through check-in and security. Job done. I for one will be using MME again in preference over the other two from now on. Use it or lose it. Sadly I get the impression that some on here would be happy if it went bust and we lost it....and the jobs it supports BTW, and all so they can say told you so.

Why would anyone use it if it doesn't offer flights to where people want to go? Most people don't plan their holidays around where the local airport offers flights to. In your particular case I get it, you had a choice of flights to your preferred destination so good on you for choosing Teesside. The majority of folk wouldn't be so fortunate.

We're using it this week for the first time in years. Looking forward to it. If they offer reasonably priced options it will be a success but I don't think the rate payers should be subsidising a facility for the more wealthy to use (and I include myself in that).

If it can't compete and goes bust then so be it. Other airports serving small areas are coping well

Sheffield Robin Hood closed though, because of the lack of passengers and destinations. The main problem with MME is that during the Peel years it lost an awful of ground to NCL.

In reply to the tone of the posts. The majority of which were written with an obvious agenda. Maybe, just maybe, some people should actually look at the facts or even better. Support their local airport by choosing to fly from there on their holidays and help it become a better and once the demand is there then it would obviously make financial sense for them to provide more flights and destinations. Just a thought.
I don’t think people pay particular attention to the departure airport until they’ve selected a destination. Where you are travelling to is more important than where you are travelling from

Which was nothing to do with peel, who initially
Invested in the airport as promised and drove it to double digit growth and enjoyed the airports record passenger numbers just shy of 1 million.

The spanner in the works was the financial crisis which decimated the travel industry - for some reason peer doesn't get a pass for that despite airports retreating to the larger hubs yet everyone teeside passenger figures or losses are spoken about someone taps their nose though and says "ah but Covid", probably work through another 5 years of that before something else gets the blame

2022 passenger numbers 173k and with much fanfare about being highest in a decade but no mention of being 5.3x less than Peel's much maligned peak or even the 700k the airport enjoyed before anyone heard of peel.

Now how much has been spent to get us from the 35k to the 173k and what will it cost to get it to 700 or 900k? Keep in mind that when it was 900k the airport was still losing money as it has never turned a profit - this is money that is meant to be invested in our area. Isn't value for money? For a few people it is because they get a flight to their destination but for most Teessiders I doubt it it is beyond a bit of local pride.

As for lounges, there's generally public lounges and airline lounges which are far better. The public lounges are decent for the money - Newcastle for example used to be about £25 for standard and £35 for the plus which is far better, but now £39 std and £45 plus, for the £5 I'd take the plus. Better drinks, food menu, quieter, comfort seats etc

For the small cost of a lounge we always take one outbound as it starts the trip off on the right foot. I've used dozens and only had one bad experience - and that was midlands airport and we got a full refund after complaining.

I've never experienced the tales of stag dos or hen dos or really drunk people. Not saying it doesn't happen but it's overstated - they usually dont even allow stag and hen parties and if people are being loud they are usually told to keep it down. We plan it so we get max time in the lounge so for 2-3 usually it covers food in the airport, keep
Phone charged, chill out while waiting on the flight and it's easy enough to get value on the drinks given the prices of pints or spirits in the airport.

You aren't supposed to, but we've always taken crisps snacks and a drink for the plane too which adds to the value further.

Much rather that than save the money and sit in the uncomfortable chairs while two sprogs hit each other in front of you.

Oh and if your flight is delayed you're usually ok to remain in the lounge but depends on the specific lounge

Agree with that. If Teesside was cheaper and better flight time I would use it but it's never once been cheaper when we have looked but always check it, and it's usually one flight whereas other airports it's been a choice of flights through the day.

NCL isn't really that far away and has great facilities

Lot of flights out on a Saturday morning / early afternoon, did well to find a seat to be honest. The lounge is a good shout if you want to guarantee a seat and have a few quiet drinks, me and the boy went in to have a look and it seemed relatively busy.

I'm not sure I buy the latent demand argument. Airlines are incredibly savvy commercially, if they really think it would be worth their time to begin flights, they would. But they can also rely on people willing to travel to use their services (Newcastle, Leeds etc).

That said, they're also hugely competitive so if one operates, others may follow.

I travel a lot for work and small regional airports can be a godsend (when fairly quiet). On a schedule it's reassuring to know you can be through in a particular time window, unlike some of the larger airports where demand fluctuates wildly.

The Amsterdam connection is particularly useful, I don't live in the area but if I was home visiting I could easily connect through Amsterdam to (almost) anywhere. That said, the 06:20 this morning departed 2hr30 mins late, would hope that's the exception rather than the rule!

Tomorrow's flight departures.
7 in total all day, 2 of which are Amsterdam flights. And while I acknowledge that connecting flights can be made in Schipol are people really saying there is a good 'choice'?

That makes it sound like they're not expecting the huge increase in passenger numbers they're officially predicting.

There's 6 and a half hours tomorrow between the penultimate and last scheduled departures. I reckon I could run the bar on that shift.

I always wonder why people moan about the facilities at Teesside, it's perfectly good for a small regional airport, where you really aren't going to have to spend much time waiting to get on a flight. People seem to be expecting something like a mini Singapore Changi :)
When travelling regularly it was perfect for me. I'm not one to hang around in airports or shop in them. There was always plenty of seating and you were in view of all the gates.

Would love the airport to succeed and grow but there is just not enough flights or locations for my choice. And they havei the room to fit more passengers in on some days if there was extra flights.

It's choice of flights I want at competitive prices. Could not care less about the lounges as like someone said above being local you don't need to spend 3 hours in there.

Used the lounge a couple of weeks ago for an evening flight to Alicante. Was a great way to start the holiday.
First time using the airport and it was probably the least stressful flying experience I’ve ever had!

Flew from Teesside to Majorca in July. Didn't pay anything extra for the use of a VIP lounge.

No complaints at all from me for the lounge area we did use. The only thing disappointing was the lack of a newsagent to get Private Eye, VIz and Take A Break.

In fact the three of us reckoned it was the best overall airport experience we've had.
