I've got an isolated 'close' button, or 'exit' button, that is, an single character 'X' on the page when in FMTTM. I can't log in without clicking on it.
Any ideas what it is and how to get rid of it?

It's your ad blocker blocking the advert that's under the close button - I don't think there's any way to avoid it - You'll just need to click the close every time

Should be able to cover it with you ad blocker and remove it.
