I expected fully we would get our ar5ses tanned tonight, being four nil down at halftime did not even seem worse than I expected ... and eventually, 6-1 .. well .. the distance in quality both on the pitch and what they have on the bench vs us, what else was going to happen given our injuries and missing players??

Would have loved to have seen what kind of a go we would have made of it with the likes of McGree, Dieng and of course Jones, etc .. but even then it'd have been an ask

Did not expect though to feel as gutted as I currently do. All day on the radio the amount of mockery made of us any time the game discussion came up .. there was never a mention barely of what a threadbare side we'd be putting out to start with. No mention of the great work Carrick has achieved, largely over his time here .. it was just 'yeah no disprespect but it is Boro ... and they're mid-table in the Championship, snort ..' ... then it would just be the noise around Rodgers if anything else

We got absolutely tanked tonight and with Rodgers going too, I damn well hope we get the right replacements in. I Know it is great for the clubs coffers and shows our model is flowing well, but for some reason I just feel tonight is unfortunately timed given how long we're waiting until our next game. So getting a rimming like that was not ideal timing for the players confidence.

Sick of the amount of times I hear Boro being discussed and there's barely ever a mention of how we're doing well, still, in the league really considering our injury situation, as well as players away on duty

I hope this isn't the start of a perod of doom and gloom, we don't get the right players in or struggle to get the main names we want (which is usually the case) after Rodgers inevitable departure. Such a shame to lose him so quickly as he is starting to look so good

Let's hope this is where Carrick's man-management skills work well on the players hopefully, after tonight. There is rarely anything you can do when up against that kind of distance in quality, a squad of that size vs our injury-ravaged threadbare side.

Sorry ... don't know why it has bothered me so much seeing us torn apart like that. I wasn't expecting Wembley or anything, but maybe just a little more effort and a lower scoreline. I did have Rodgers to score and Crooksy to pick up a yellow on my bet builder, like! ha ha just about missed out though otherwise would've cashed in nicely, that would have softened the blow

(I have just lost a friend unexpectedly out the blue, to suicide so I dunno, maybe that and the miserable weather is getting to me and i am over reacting. Oh well.)

I just think it is shocking sometimes the amount of times we don't get the credit we deserve. You'd have thought were playing a full strength side tonight of journey man plodders with Mick McCarthy in charge the way the usuals moaned and groaned about us whenever we come up before this game in a feature.

Or so when I heard anyway. Carrick has done so much more than people realise, it's a shame tonight was not in any way really us, it was a one-off .. glad its over

Here's to hoping we get what we want in through the doors before the window shuts, we climb the league table and I hope each and every one of those players has forgotten about tonight already.

#UTB

It was unfortunate how it played out tonight. But the team were at fault for all the goals, it was a poor, disappointing performance. There's quite a few mitigating circumstances, but we were awful tonight, as we can be sometimes

Hey ho. Let's build from this

And this of course means that Middlesbrough losing a high profile match 6-1 is completely and utterly insignificant.

Seems your projecting your grief onto the team.

All the best and sorry for your loss.

One of the worse efforts ive seen us perform as a 2nd tier team. Seen us compete with, man utd, liverpool, man city away and win and at least competed and made a game of it. Tonight we just collapsed unfortunately.

It will be old news by this time tomorrow when Liverpool beat Fulham and they will be the talk of the town.

It might be worth avoiding the media for the time being as it will only get under your skin more, same with twitter etc. That’s what I’m planning anyways, no point doom scrolling through all the condescending tweets from anonymous accounts.

Sorry to hear the loss of your friend also.

Yeah but in reality we aren't doing very well historically for us. We need Carrick the team nd recruitment to get us back to our average at least (which isn't mid table 2nd division)

Yes, of course it is. I said that very thing to a friend earlier, it does render it meaningless ... but I still go ahead and moan anyway, typically.

Been several things lately that have come out blue and rocked me, but I would have written that tonight anyway, the amount of little doyles on the radio who irked me, leading up to the game over the past fortnight. I had already mentioned it once before this. Hah

Of course, recent events probably won't have helped the tone of my message, inappropriate to bring up what I did on reflection and now I feel like a cretin.

But anyway. We go again in a couple of weeks. As I say I hope we get done what we need to in what remains of the window and we finish the season as strongly as we can. #UTFB

It's about time I just stopped listening to a certain mainstream sports radio channel hosted only by fans of billionaire-owned London clubs .. mostly Chelsea

I don't think he's projecting his grief onto the team and during such dark times, things like football cut through the numbness and provide a welcome respite from the negative emotions, as I'm sure you know yourself.

The team played badly and let themselves down. Saying so and voicing your opinion is not projecting your grief, Cosmo. You're more than entitled to a post which I thought was very reasoned and put together. Nor is Middlesbrough Football Club insiginificant due to the loss of your friend and you shouldn't feel bad for still thinking about the game and feeling emotions about it.

I have had similarly bad news this week and I wish you the best in processing the reality and hope that time and memories provide comfort.

Well thought out, balanced discussion doesn't exist on talksport.

Tonight wasn't our night but we know how well Carrick is doing, maybe it's better if he stays under the radar a bit.

I get irked when I hear trite statements on the radio from people who know nothing about our club. They haven't watched a sea change in skill and application over the the last year. They haven't seen the injuries pile up. They don't know our squad and the mountains it can move.

Good. It'll be a surprise the everyone how capable and well run we are and how we continue to play, mostly, elegant and exciting football to a point where we will inevitably replace a team in the PL that has failed to maintain this capability.

People outside our fan base look at us differently.
Perhaps even… objectively

We should have been battered at The Riverside
We were massive underdogs last night

And, we lived up to that in some style - we were cack all over the pitch

Did they mention we were missing our

Almost our original Back 4
No 1 Keeper
Key mf attacker jonesy
Creative mf rikey
First choice striker

To name a few

It really was. That was the frustrating element to last night. After 40 mins at 4-0 I could see the Chelsea fans to our left looking a bit bored with it all so easy was it and that we just didn't give them a fight.

Morgan Rogers did look a player that wouldn't look out of place in the PL but the rest ( Howson included as age isn't on his side) just didn't. And it looks like Rogers isn't going to be around too much longer

Thanks for the post mate

Life has to go on indeed, but aye, I have been shaken for a few days. Being a sufferer of depression/mental illness myself, the news just broken me as we are seeing suicide more and more these days, I always wake up on a morning wishing it isn't the world we live in and it is all just a bad dream. But I dunno, find it hard to articulate when I am stressed .. anyone in the struggle, I salute you as it is so difficult

But regards to the game, a shame we were so badly beaten, as if we han't had so many players unavailable, we could have given them a bit more of a challenge. I just don't want the result to have a bad efect on our league form going forward now, we should totally wipe it out of our minds. Some of the rubbish in the papers this morning is pathetic.

Rogers looking like leaving isn't ideal but at the same time we do have the means to replace him, it is just with it being January, it isn't the greatest time to be looking

Always seems like this point in every season we are saying the same thing, that we'll be better equipped next year after profiting on a few gems! It is going to be interesting to see what is ahead for us in the Summer, especially with all the interest around Hackney too.. even Carrick himself could be poached but I hope not

Hope we manage to get our business sorted anyway, and if we make a decent profit on Rogers we get the right replacements through the door #UTFB

Felt a bit like the Brighton cup game last season, we tried to play football and got royally spanked. Villa at home this season was our template, but we couldn’t execute that with the players available. Credit to Chelsea as well, looked much more polished than two weeks ago, probably due to having ten days to prepare rather than two? Chilwell seemed to have a good game and Palmer popped up where we didn’t expect, just glad we don’t come up against that quality every week. They had a current England international on the bench, we had an 18 year old who has made one appearance.

Our players missing or not fully fit:

Jones
Latte Lath
Banguera
McGree
Coburn
McNair
Forss
Dieng
Silvera
Dijksteel
Greenwood
Azaz
Ayling

13 Players - half our squad.
add in McNair, Coburn, Forss, Dijksteel, Hackney, Howson, O'Brien, were not fully match fit and 90 minute ready. Then that's even worse.

Asking a midtable championship B-team carrying roughly 2 players half fit, to play away toa billion pound team and not get battered, is a big ask.

My expectation was we would lose 3-0. I didn't expect as many individual errors as that.

I also expected Chelsea to create15+ chances, they didn't they only had about half that and had a very high conversion rate. I think the score massively flattered them, despite them being comfortably better. The frustration for me was that 3-1 or at a push 4-1 was a fairer reflection, but a couple of players had shockers.

The most frustrating thing for me last night was to gift two goals just before half time, go in at two down and who knows?!
