Talk sport just mentioned the riverside could be in danger from riding tides

Sea flooding is still rare in this country. I haven't noticed rising sea levels despite years of global warming. I know a few Pacific islands have been abandonned but they were extremely low lying. Hasn't there being an increase in desalination plants which involves taking water out if the seas and more evaporation from higher temperatures.

You should be able to get lidar data to show approx ground levels at the Riverside, it's open source so free to get.

As for the stadium sinking due to the type of ground it is built on that is highly unlikely. I think the whole area around there was reclaimed from the river and I remember being on site when Harbour and General were doing some remediation works in around 2000 and in some places there was something like 8m of steel slag that had been used. The stadium will be piled to transfer loads down to competent strata, likely the bedrock. The pitch will have been built up off a bed of compacted materials probably beneath drainage layers and I don't think there has been any issue with settlement over the years so that should not be a problem.

Sunderland's ground was built on coal mine workings / shafts iifc. Probably more chance of issues there but still unlikely as they will have treated the ground where necessary.

thing is though, "if" the sea levels do rise in line with predicted models it's not like they are going to rise 50ft overnight. it will be cm per year. giving us plenty of time to deal with it

Im sure that when the Riverside was about to open, there was some fella on the news who said that because of the type of surface the stadium was built on, it would eventually start to sink, which would lead us to having to build a new ground! Can anyone else remember this or have I just dreamt it!!
Not sure about that but I remember an article in the sports gazette saying that because of rising sea levels the riverside would be moved bit by bit away from the river on NASA’s shuttle transporters. I’ve fallen for some April fools jokes in my time but that one is the most shameful.

I wonder if this was a factor in employing Tony Pulis? I mean midgets like hignet and Juninho playing pretty passing football is going to be no use if they're underwater.
