Taking one for the team

This annoys me more than diving TBH. Two good attacks stopped in the second half by tactical fouling. It's more viable now with five subs as players can just be subbed off when they're on a yellow.
I'd like to see action being taken. Have them count as two yellow cards with regards to suspension or something like that.

I agree. I’m not saying we would have scored from those attacks. But we would have had a better chance than a free kick just inside their half. Something needs to be done about it. Maybe a straight red? Would certainly make them think twice about it.

Sin bin for 2 mins, I hate the idea of sin bins in football but when you're pressing forward attacking and you're player is taken out then it's more costly?

Yeah, starting to get really annoying. Watching City/Newcastle and Lascelles got a yellow for spoiling a great break by Doku. It's just constant and it's ruining it as a spectacle.

It's put Doku in the position of being able to have a run at them all now though. Hopefully he leaves a few on their arsés.

Tbh, Clayton was one of the cleverest players I've ever seen at this and I appreciated him for it greatly. Tended to only do it when necessary. Ultimately under the rules as they are it's just a cost of doing business.

Sam Greenwood on the other hand seems to take one for no good reason most games. Absolutely brain-dead.

People didn't used to complain whenever Clayton did it.

Either Ayling or Howson should have done it when we played Sunderland. Both of them had the opportunity to take Clarke out leading up to the goal but instead he was allowed time and space to take a touch and pick out the goalscorer.

Completely disagree. The players know the rules and play to them. There's nothing better than seeing a well timed cynical challenge that breaks up play when your team is caught out of position. By all means, campaign to get the rules changed but as it stands taking one for the team is a perfectly valid tactic.

Much the same as time-wasting. You hate it when it's done to you but love it when your players are getting away with it.

I'd much rather see current rules applied correctly - six-seconds for keepers and foul throws penalised - than tinker with what constitutes a yellow card based on more subjectivity.

No it isn't. It's cheating pure and simple.
Is it cheating if it's covered by the rules (or laws if you prefer)?

Pretending you've been hit in the head is cheating. Booting someone and giving a foul away is just part of the game - cynical yes, cheating no.

It's cheating, but it's cheating that the rules of the game legislate for. Should the rules be different? Perhaps. But everyone going up in arms has knacked the sinbin idea that seems to be the reasonable middle ground here.

Fake injuries and similar gamesmanship are a form of cheating taking advantage of rules there for the wellbeing of players that the rules seem incapable of adapting to and is more of a fraud on the game IMO.

I guess it goes on what the definition of cheating is. But it's deliberately breaking the rules to gain an advantage and whatever that's called it's not a good thing whichever team does it. In my opinion.

It’s annoyed the hell out of me too. But there were three incidents. Why aren’t you counting the one that stopped the promising Blackburn attack? All three got booked. Rightly so, and it’s probably not enough. But they’re all as bad as each other surely

I will have missed it as I was only half watching unless you are talking about ayling which I thought wasn't even a foul.

And of course I want my players to do the same. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see it more harshly punished. Players do it because the punishment is less than the crime. Not in favour of sin bins or anything that will fundamentally alter the game. That's a slippery slope. And while retrospective punishment doesn't provide redress to the aggrieved team, I think it would make players less likely to foul in the first place. Unless they are Gary O'Neill and the golf is on.

Putting that aside, is it not a yellow card to put someone in a headlock? And then when pushing and shoving happens afterwards resulting in a yellow card for both players, shouldn't that be a red card for the player who also instigated the headlock? It just seemed strange that Lath got the same yellow card punishment as the guy who did the headlock off the ball
