Surge Pricing in Pubs

Suppose the argument will be that it's already a thing with happy hours and weekend pricing.

In Scotland there are licensing laws which were introduced to prevent happy hours and short-term promotions. Intended to deter binge drinking, but would also apply to surge pricing the other way.
Any price changes must stay in place for a minimum of 72 hours and be implemented at the start of a day's licensing hours.

I think in the context of this story incase people haven't clicked the link it's important to note that the £2 'surge' pricing is because they have to have a higher level of security after 10pm due to the terms of their license. I guess the other option was to raise prices all day to cover the increased security that they need after 10pm.

I have less of a problem with this because you know in advance that the prices change and they at least give some justification. It's proper surge prices depending on demand that I'd object to where companies are really just profiteering.

To a degree, if happened in other bars when I was younger but they were just packaged up differently.

When I worked in Walkabout we had drinks offers and specials on during the week and day times / Sunday. After 7pm on a Friday / Saturday those offers would were removed.

Double spirt and mixer woke go from £3 to £5+ or about £7.50 if you were on double vodka red bull.

Pints would increase by a minimum of £1. Back then you could get a Stella / Guinness for £2 outside of peak time. On a weekend evening/night they’d be closer to £3.50 / £4.

The difference these days is that those day time prices will be nowhere near the same equivalent. IE. They’ll be adding the £2 onto an already inflated price of beer.

I had many nights out back in the day on £30-£40, including a bit of food and taxi home. How times have changed!

The price of drinks in pubs and restaurants is getting ridiculous now. Plenty people I know just don't bother going out unless it's a special occasion.

I used to pop out 1-2 a week for a few sociable ones but that doesn't happen anymore, mainly based on cost.

Luckily I’m part of The Day Fever crowd so will definitely not be affected.

There are a million and one things I can get myself wound up about, £2 extra on a pint in a city centre pub after 10pm is not one of them thankfully!!

It’ll only be a success or failure depending on how the punters react..

We’re not forced to buy the drink. As long as clear pricing what’s wrong.

I think the oasis ticket fiasco was wrong tho as people who’d waited hours were suddenly faced with big hikes and felt pressured into paying…

If I was in a pub and they poured me a pint and said it’s £2 more than the last round, I’d leave it on the bar and walk off
