An away fan at the King Power Stadium has been given a three-year football banning order after he admitted making an offensive gesture about the tragic helicopter crash that killed five people including Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha five years ago. The incident happened on Tuesday, October 24 during Leicester's home match against Sunderland, which Leicester won 1-0.

Keelan Murray, 20, was charged with a public order offence for making a gesture that referenced the helicopter crash at the stadium in October 2018. The incident happened three days before the fifth anniversary of the crash, which also killed pilots Eric Swaffer and Izabela Lechowicz as well as King Power employees Kaveporn Punpare and Nusara Suknamai.

Leicestershire Police arrested Murry at the stadium after he was seen making the gesture and at Leicester Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday) he pleaded guilty to the charge. The magistrates banned him from attending any league matches for the next three years.

Murray, of Coquet in Rickleton, Washington, near Sunderland, was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 in costs and a £48 victim surcharge. PC David Stevens, Leicestershire Police’s dedicated football officer, said: “Anyone who engages in making offensive gestures or ‘tragedy chanting’ faces the risk of arrest if caught.

“Such behaviour has no place in football. We will continue to work with the club to identify those committing such offences.
