Sub forums

Not sure about that personally. One of the things I like is stumbling across stuff because it is all on one forum.

There are quite a few things I would never have got an interest or passing knowledge in were it not for seeing a thread and being curious enough to click on it. I'm not sure I'd see these things if they were cordoned off in a sub forum. Politics might be the one area, but most politics really revolves around current affairs.

I don't think there should be forums for many different topics - personally I would but as above keeping it general does help - the key thing for me is politics is probably the most divisive thing on FMTTM so I think there should at least be a political forum so that arguments don't spill into the day to day.

The threads are always circular arguments anyway.

Well I did say a handful - I didn't mean loads!

Having sections doesn't stop you seeing them as you can use the "what's new" view or just click into them but it does give a bit of structure and mean if you want to avoid stuff you easily can.

I’m not sure that’s true and if you only appeal to an older crowd then you’ll eventually die out.

All of the forums I use have sub-forums. All of them.

This one doesn't! :)

And nor does the old FMTTM. I'm neither for nor against splitting the forum as long as you don't end up with dozens of the damn things. Perhaps just a Football and an "Everything Else" split?

Yeah I think that would work better than just everything in one.

Other boro forums aren't the best yardstick seeing as they are fairly quiet.

https://www.readytogo.net/smb/ is an example of one well set up. Not saying go into that degree of detail, because its orders of maginitude larger than FMTTM, but shows how it works.

TBH not that bothered, I agree with Primus but feel this is probably as much change as this crowd can handle in one go. Next time there is some political upheaval I'm sure it can be revisited.

Just having a working modern forum is great, sub forums can wait for the future I'd say.
Tags might be a better solution. Having a set of fixed tags that could identify a thread and then having the ability to only show the threads with your chosen tags might work. Not sure if that functionality is built in on here though.

Ok I'll say it again, if this forum only appeals to the more elderly crowd it will die.

I understand the sub forum thing ... I use a few forums which have many. But I have always liked the broad church of fmttm... stumbling across stuff that you wouldn't if they were in a sub-forum. Thing is, I'm the sort of person .... and it isn't age, it's more personality type ... that prefers not to arrange his CDs like a library, in alphabetical order. I like happy surprises. The joy of the random. It really isn't an age thing. It's an outlook thing.

But people who like to stumble across threads can do this by using the what's new feature or the new posts feature which will show new posts across all sub forums.
