Stuani

There’s a few players that I’d have liked for us to have kept and Stuani is one of them.

James Morrison, Chris Brunt, Robert Huth, Patrick Bamford, Marcus Tavernier, Chuba Akpom.. ah well

onwards and upwards!
 
I watched the bormuff v girona friendly. Stuani was very feisty, getting involved in all sorts of niggles, thought he might get sent off - looked good tho

I'd have liked to have kept Chuba too.
However, his sale paid for last year's signings, including Rogers

Rogers' sale has paid for this Summer's signings.

I have to think we made the right call, rather than keep him for another year.

We would have fared very well, I am sure. Much better than we did without him. I know the excuse was always "oh, but he finds that space coming in from the wide position, it would be different if he was starting as the striker", but his finishing was far better than those who were missing them up front for us at the time, and when he DID play up front, for us or for anyone else, he showed he certainly could score as a striker.
Seems like another of the classic Boro "if only " moments ...including picking Gestede over Bamford, Marco Branca's injury, various cup pivotal moments....

Jones scored more goals from wide last year than Stuani did (Stuani scored 5 of his 11 goals playing as a striker) so it's also overstated how effective he was coming in from that wide position.

I liked Karanka in the championship for us. And Stuani did a job out wide. And I suppose we did get promotion so you can say the ends justified the means.

But I'm pretty sure Karanka ****ed up a bit insisting on playing him there. I think he'd have scored an absolute hatful if we'd just played him up front.
 
It’s not as big an error in judgement as some make out because before he came to us he’d been decent enough but certainly wasn’t making the numbers he did after returning to Spain.
Of course in hindsight we should have played him up front but when he came from Espanyol he wasn’t a player with a history to suggest he’d score loads of goals.
