Stewart Downing Interview In The Times Today

Not many was worse and on as much as he was for sure. Ill remove potentially and say he was a very disruptive influence then. his 2nd spell was an absolute shambles and rightfully deserved booing. The first spell he was immense until he started whacking transfer requests in left right and centre.
If you thought his 2nd spell was an absolute shambles I don’t think football is the sport for you

‘rightfully deserved booing’ again you may need to think again about if this is the sport for you.

Was you happy with his second spell like. Easily pleased you like

Great interview, thanks for posting. I was always a fan of Stewart after seeing his debut at Ipswich in April 2002, I liked Moore & Hendrie and Ripley a lot guess I just love watching a winger at work...

The toxic element of our support always slated him, local lads are expected to walk on water. As the interview shows Stewart is a positive lad so he should be fine with whatever he chooses to do next. Wish him well...

Good read but I just wish he didn't resent Karanka, he's made a few comments about him now and always seems to bring him up.

I'd love to hear Karanka's thoughts on it all.

To be fair, it does look like what Downing says fits the bill.

Obviously there's always 2 sides to every story, but with everything that happened in that promotion campaign, and then with what happened in the premier league season, I do think Downing is telling the truth.

Not going to Juve when he had a chance must be a regret.

I can't imagine him doing much in the media or in management but hopefully he can successfully impart his experience in a coaching role.

How good a read was that.

Quite wistful reading as a Boro fan of Stewy's age. Wish I was sat on the balcony of my house in Ibiza reflecting on it all!

"Gareth was really good. He was a manager as a player, really, so the last couple of years as a player, I used to want approval from him more than the manager."
That's fascinating. Have always heard the rumours that Gareth had pretty much taken over behind the scenes towards the end of Steve Mc's time.

“I know (Capello) liked me as a player. He even tried to get me to go to Juventus. He wanted all his players to play Champions League. He said, ‘you need to leave Middlesbrough. Would you go to Juventus? They like you.’ I said, ‘It’s not that easy, I can’t just walk out tomorrow! I’ve got to earn that move’.”
Fascinating!

“Aitor always had a lot of turnover of players because he falls out with that many people."
Did he? I think of Karanka and I think of Dimi, Gibson, Ayala, Friend, Leadbitter, Clayton and Kike playing every single game. For sure he was ruthless with those he wanted out. I'd be surprised if he turned over significantly more players than any of our other recent managers. Think Stewy's memory might be playing tricks there.

Funny how the article doesn't mention that him and Woody are family, especially when it talks about Downing's sisters. Not reading anything into it at all but it's an interesting part of his story and I thought it would appear in the article somewhere.

I am sitting on my balcany on my house in Thailand reflecting on the Times piece. I really like Stewy. he doesnt muck around with managers or take any crap. Over the years bits have come out about his relations with hierachy including club management and always seems to be conflict..... Management material? Not sure about that ....

I cant remember seeing another young kids debut and being as excited as I was when I first saw him play - was it Fulham?

For me he's the greatest home grown boro player, certainly in the modern era.

Thanks for the memories Stuey, hope he goes on to make a succesful career in management or coaching.

I think he's just being honest. That's what happened and he has no reason to hide it. Good read that I enjoyed it.

Capello was a bit of a tool telling him to leave us :)

Brentford away off the bench in the league cup, Ipswich away full debut. That's from memory though which has been known to go wrong.
