Steel import limits removed

We aren't a low cost chicken producer. One of the most expensive in Europe. Brazil and Ukraine are about 60% of carcass costs compared with the UK. The USA 70% of our cost. Brazil and the USA are the world's largest exporters, with worldwide markets.

The USA wouldn't be pressing us for chicken to be part of a trade deal if it wasn't in their interests. The government have said "no chlorinated chicken" though and, politically, it would be a hard sell to the UK public to change their stance.
There don't seem to be many complaints about the Australia trade deal, where the standards are very similar to the US, including chlorinated chicken.

I don't disbelieve your figures, but if we are more expensive than Europe why didn't we import most of our chicken from Europe (when in the EU).

Cargill operate a lot of chicken plants in the UK and the plant need me (in the UK) has grown in size and as has the breeding plants in the countryside. (Locals have complained).

We import 27% of our poultry.

The difference in cost is about 6% with France and Germany, which may be eaten into by transportation. Poland are about 13% cheaper. It's the USA and Brazil that are the biggest potential cheap sources . . . depending upon politics.

The Netherlands is the largest chilled meat exporter in the world, so perhaps we import from them.

Found this chart that confirms Netherlands and Poland the two largest exporters to the UK:

Wasn't it Gove who said that voters were sick of experts?
Just like Trump attempting to delegitimise the media as long as you can get enough people to listen it doesn't matter how big a lie is.
What many thought Brexit was going to be about, taking back control etc, will take years to become apparent that it is not the case and by then it'll be too late to turn course.
Whether it is steel, meats or any sort of goods, we'll be at risk of lower standards due to our desperation to strike a deal. The EU has 400 and odd million people in it, the 3rd largest number in the world behind China and India so it is far easier for them to demand better standards during deals.
I'm no expert of course, but I'm sure Gove wouldn't want my opinion to matter.

The EU is a decent size but it is also a collection of countries with differing agendas, unlike say China, India, USA. This usually means there has to be lots of meetings about meetings so talks take a long time to conclude.

Ref Poultry Production - the UK is the second biggest producer in Europe and produces over 25% more than in 2000 which is consistent with expanding production near me. I suppose Brits are eating more and more poultry. I rarely eat chicken, certainly factory chicken. I have seen the inside of the factory and the chicken sheds.

India and the USA are not a collection of countries, but their states have always had very different agendas.

BB - Just interested in the conflict - Civilians trying to preserve their democracy against a military coup. It was our doorstep too (Gibralter borders Spain). I was fascinated that in the early years of the conflict Women would happily grab a gun and fight in the front line side by side with men (shown), because they believed so strongly in their cause. And they were encouraged to do so in the Spanish Anarchist movements. "No Pasaran" was slogan taken from the Paris Commune when some of the citizens of Paris defended the City from the Prussians (Germans) after their own army had ran away. It means they shall not pass which I thought crossed over into football (a bit!)
Interesting. I have a passing interest in it too. Obviously read Orwell & EH , both good in their own way. A few weeks ago I actually ordered an International Brigade t-shirt somewhat in the style of your pp.

most of the chicken we eat is polish. it is half the price of UK chicken. i read somewhere a few years back that we export as much chicken as we import.

We get three times more chicken from Netherlands than from Poland.

Not quite true (it's only about 1.3 times the amount of Poland) but we do import more chicken from the Netherlands than we export to everywhere added together.

Obviously as they are both in the EU they have stricter standards than countries the EU doesn't allow imports from.

Netherlands are the world's largest chilled chicken exporters. Latest info I could find for UK imports:
