My late Dad used to call him Farmer Giles .... he always said he looked weather beaten and had a unique walk....
 
Remember a game - I think Bristol City- Alec appeared to take a punch and fell backwards as if he’d been hit by a tank! Don’t think he was too badly hurt - he was a tough sod!

I think the Bristol player was Brian Dryesdale. Tough little full back just like Alec

Love these blast from the past names, a poster will remember an incident, someone will post names, that's what it's about, great memories

Nosmo-king, good morning, it was a different world mate, I started going late 71 I must have seen Alec Smith playing but can't remember, I do remember him as our kit an for many years
 
Derrick Downing lodged on Crescent Road when he first signed for the Boro

He'd pop out and have a kick around with a gang of us who were playing football on the corner of Worcester Street (Ayresome school wall = 1 goal , Raines Dairy wall was the other)
He was a smashing guy and could back heel the ball hard than any of us could hoof properly!
