Spike: In Memoriam

As you might had gathered from my username, Spike was a bit of a hero to me - my all time favourite player. So the news of his death a week or so ago knocked me for six. So much so, that I found I couldn't really add to the many great threads in appreciation that sprang up last week. Instead, I've written a blog about Spike and his loss. It's also a reflection on the relationship we have, particularly at key moments in our lives, with sporting and cultural icons. What my regular blog readers will think of it, expecting their usual diet of political ranting and reviews of books, films and theatre, I daren't stop to think. For younger supporters, no doubt a little fed up with board nostalgia for ancient history, as I was when my dad droned on about Mannion and Hardwick, take a deep breath and give it a go. One day, you will feel like this about Juninho.....

A good read that, thanks. I've mentioned that free-kick elsewhere, but if I was to choose one moment that takes me right back to my time in the Holgate this was it. Draw a straight line from the ball, through the angle of post and crossbar and on - that is where I was stood. I and just knew it was going in. Fabulous time to be a Boro fan..... (sigh) (y)
