I never saw Souness play so can't comment. There's some ludicrous comments on here regarding Keane though. The guy was top class, absolutely dominated games and could certainly play. The away game Vs Juventus was the ultimate Keane game. 2-0 down and missing the final due to a booking but drove them on to a 3-2 win.

Not old enough to remember Souness. Keane was a class player but what a miserable fekker. Surprised nobody kicked him off the park. Remember he didn’t fare so well against Viera.

I tried my best to think about this without being biased
I still went for Souness
But I am completely biased. I can't help it.
I will always pick a Boro player over a player from any other team.
Unless it's Rudy Gestede of course but that goes without saying.

Souness was a midfield general with range of passing, good vision, combative plus goals.. he was effective both attacking & defensively..

Keane, was bought by two of the best ever managers.. so must be more to his game than kicking lumps out of the opposition.. though, imho, was an expensive Robbie Savage but with a nasty edge..

The phrase 'midfield general' didn't exist before Souness - the man is a legend

In terms of drive and that mental desire to win, they were both 11/10.

In terms of skill, Souness was a 9, Keane more like a 7.

in terms of stamina, Keane probably edges it. I never saw him less than intense for the full 90 minutes regardless of the importance of the game. Maybe 10/10 vs 8/10.

Who was harder?

In an age full of hard challenges and hard men, did anyone ever get the better of Souness? I never saw it. Not in England, not in Europe. It was even more brutal away in Europe. Liverpool bossed English football and European football for a decade. I think that edges it.

If they had come up against each other I don’t think Souness would have come off second. He had a little more control. I think he’d have been smarter than Keane, outplayed him, left a few on him, wound him up until Keane lost it and got himself sent off.

Definitely a contest I’d have paid to see.
