Evening,

I posted these song lyrics a while ago and finally got around to putting some music to them. They're based on my Grandfather's life and a few people seemed to enjoy them, so music too below.

Thanks.

Ten Thousand Miles

Led from the shadow of Misty Law, by a desperate search for more
To Albert Dock with son and daughter and steerage space for four
Across the Ocean to the Hudson, along the rails to the Great Lakes
Milwaukee dock and poorer quarters, such as a stevedore makes

All those miles, all those days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

Two urgent tickets Eastward and you clasp your mother’s hand
Cholera took your sister, then the docks took your old man
Mother is so broken and so ravaged by the pain
But she says you’ve got each other and some-how you’ll find a way

All those miles, all those days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

Truants don’t care, for bed-time prayer, or the sting of the master’s cane.
Fast to the devil and the fights at Beith and Lochwinnoch again.
She’s mother to another, no space for a brother, so you sign up to serve.
A boy soldier in India where your stepfather can’t hurt you.

Ten thousand miles, so may days
Trying hard to find a better place, just to feel the same, do you feel the same?

They told you to be brutal and they showed you how to drink
You diced away your wages as they taught you want to think
Then marched out from your billet house, they shipped you into France
Friends choking in the mustard gas, blood running through your hands.

Ten thousand miles, so many days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

You work the docks in the biting cold, no shelter from the hills
A Stevedore, like your father, working hard to pay the bills
The nurse was from an English port, she’s mother now and wife.
You’ve no Mother, Dad or sister of your own, but that’s just life.

Ten thousand miles, so many days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.
