Someone has felled Sycamore Gap Tree Overnight

I would birch him and his companions.

I know it won't be the same but I wonder if they will transplant another tree in it's place?
This is what I think they will do, they will dig one up from a forest or somewhere, which is just on the edge of being small enough to move. We can move wind turbine blades and this should be simpler than that.

Digging out the roots, and replanting it is the easy bit, with a very high success rate, happens a lot in construction, it's just the moving of it. I suppose they could bend and trim the smaller branches/ roots and if they retain the height and main roots it should be fine.

Doubt they will get one to the same size, as it's 35m high and probably 20m wide, but they could get two thirds of that I reckon.

I don't see the point in waiting another 50-100 years for the old one to regrow, to the point where it can almost replicate the old images etc.

They might be able to dig the old one out, and get it to regrow somewhere else, so it lives on, would be sad to lose it altogether.

Far too clean a cut for a 16 YO - that is someone who knows and has practised tree-felling.

I read somewhere that the kid hacked it, to the point where it would have come down, but then they got a pro in to fell it, and tidy it up, not sure if some or all of that is true.

Would have took a massive saw to chop it mind, probably a 1.5m blade or bigger, takes a pro to use one of those, and something like that is certainly not going to be their first rodeo.

That won’t be true. If the tree had still been even partially attached it would have been saleable. No way would they have cut it down.

And why would they tidy up the fallen part?

Yeah, might not be, was only saying what I had read, but people can overeact and think things are worse than they actually are. See the same thing all the time with crashed cars, recovery trucks assume write offs and end up smashing in every panel getting it on the truck, or the depot yard move them around with forks, causing more damage, all it does is hike insurance costs unnecessarily. Like that wonky building which was pulled down after it set on fire, it was no more likely to fall down than how it was, and could have been made safe just as quick as it was pulled down.

I think they would tidy the fallen part so it looks a bit less gruesome, but maybe not.

Also heard one of the local farmers hated it, due to all the people crossing his land to go look at it, and he did it or got someone to do it, and they got the kid to take the wrap (knowing full well it's a slap on the wrist at most, with our lax laws). Maybe they didn't expect it to kick off as much as it has, but they were naive thinking that, if that was the case.

I assume by "getting a pro in" they mean someone in the family who knew what they were doing?

Can't imagine they got someone out of the yellow pages in the middle of night, no questions asked.

Either way can't see that being true. "Christ lad you've not vandalised it properly at all there. Let me get my kit and show you how it's done. Better tidy it up too for when they find it in the morning".

Without wishing to downplay what's happened, anyone who's ever tried to get rid of a sycamore will know that tree isn't dead yet. Unless they also coated it in stump killer, it'll be shooting up again next spring. I had three huge sycamores removed a couple of years ago and the little sods still keep popping up from the remaining roots.

Yeah, no biggie for people to wait 35 years for it to look the same eh?

an expert in tree felling I am not.. but it looks like a pretty clean one time cut to me.

An interesting comment from a professional woodsman on Facebook about the ‘straight cut’..

‘A professional would have done a gob cut (nick in the side) and hinge, cut lower and taking off the root buttresses. Any large sharp chainsaw will do a straight cut. I believe it was likely a youngster, with a big saw, at least 60cc and a big bar, not a B&Q garden saw. Very silly and risky thing to do though, it could have resulted in death or injury to the assailant.’

They've said they're going to wait for it to regrow as it's a very healthy tree and should start to grow next year. Although it'll grow more like a big bush now than a tree. That's hoping there's no more damage to it as it grows or isn't eaten by wildlife.

I think trying to remove it would damage the wall and they've moved some big oak trees lately and the success rate wasn't good.

There is a gob cut. It was done with a pro's saw which was very sharp. The gob cut is visible in the right hand photo in Newy's post.

I have felled many trees. I'm not a pro, but I'm pretty experienced (have a chunk of forest in Sweden). I'd be well happy with that job.

Just got back from Sweden today, plenty of trees there. What a great place.

Lets hop the culprit gets their just deserts.

Yes, I know what you mean. I think just knowing who did it and why would satisfy most people.
I think there must be something more than just plain vandalism.
It’s a bit like the vandalism of the coliseum in Italy that shocked the country as on paper it was just some graffiti but in reality it was a whole lot more
