Some positive from the Gazette

As much as Hackney would love to stay at Boro, he's not going to turn down an opportunity at a good PL club. The interest is there. It's coming. If we were on the fringes on a promotion we maybe could have twisted his arm but we look miles away. Let's be honest.

Hackney, like Rogers, can go and earn more in one 4 or 5 year PL contract than they could in their whole career if they stay in the Championship. Money aside, as sportsmen, I'm sure they want to be playing at the top level not Championship level. Especially if they have international aspirations which Hackney does.

Playing under Carrick or a hometown club just isn't going to trump that. In this game you need to take your opportunities when you have them and it sounds like Hackney will have a few PL options from what I've heard.

Crooks signed a new deal last summer and Rogers only signed for us in the summer. Both gone in the following window. Getting them on new contracts might give us a stronger negotiating position should we sell but there is no guarantee it means they are staying. Still a good thing to get them signed up though.

Exactly. After selling Rogers 6 months into a 4 year deal I don't put any stock in people signing new deals. The faith in "the model" has been severely damaged.

They had to pay for it though didn't they? And it was only after Villa management saw him play against them. He had not been scouted - they just saw him on the pitch and thought we have to get him.
I do love the way these deals are structured now, don't you. ie we all were unimpressed by the initial fee for Tav, especially as it was right before the season but we have received over £1m for him recently - from a new appearances linked payment. I don't know what his eventual total fee will be but it will be vastly more than his reported signing on fee.

"I'm a loyal man, I love Middlesbrough I'd love to stay and be their manager one day".

Paul Merson, 1998 on a BBC Sports show.

Remind me what happened next......
Well, it was a long week.........

Hackney.....I hope we come to some sort of agreement with him similar to Tav whereby if we don't go up next season we let him go, don't stand in his way.

But £20m to the club, big signing on fee and £50k week to him.....head is bound to be turned.

We shall see what happens 😬😬

I believe this season was that season...
I doubt any such promises were made before this season. It doesn’t mean we wouldn’t let him leave if the right offer and club came in but he was still pretty inexperienced at the time.

I’m sure there was some interest but he would have known he’s better off playing regularly for us than being on the bench in the Premier league. This season has also been interrupted by injury and inconsistent form so interest may have cooled a bit. I’m sure with a reasonable pay rise and signs of progress over the summer including Carrick extending his contract, he could be persuaded to stay at least another year unless a really good offer comes in.

McGree may need assurances too but Van Den Berg I think will be more than happy to sign an extension as he knows he’s playing regularly and progressing nicely. We know that’s all he cares about or he wouldn’t be here in the first place. A pay rise is just recognition of the progress he’s made and won’t stop teams coming in for him if that continues.

Interest hasn't cooled. He's still a top player even though he's been injured. The interest is still there.
Boro's wage structure doesn't get anywhere near what he can get in PL. We simply can't compete in that department.
We don't look anywhere near being able to build a team capable of promotion next season, that carrot is no longer there.

I'm not sure where this fallacy comes from that players know they are better getting game time at a Championship Club. The reality is, they will back themselves to break into the first team of a top club. That's essential of being a top player. Having that self belief. Look at the lads like Harvey Elliot, Conor Bradley, Rico Lewis, Brennan Johnson etc. They are getting opportunities because they are good enough. You've to go and put yourself in the mix and be brave to get those chances. I'm sure Hackney backs himself to do it. He will know he's not going to a top club and walk into the first team but he'll have to play himself in. Exactly the same as Rogers is attempting to do at Villa. By the way Hackney has a much better chance at being successful in my opinion.

That’s the point.

It’s entirely sensible for MFC to tie up their younger more saleable assets on longer contracts, gives them more leverage with potential suitors. For the players they will get a higher wage in return, Hackney, McGree, RVDB will I am sure have release clauses inserted in as well. I am sure Carrick wants them as cornerstone of his team next season, but if the right money is on the table from a PL club they will be gone, cornerstones or not. As for Carrick, his stock isn’t so high at present, so again gives him security, but we all know if results continue as they are in to next season, new longer contract will just give him a bigger pay off!
On a side not I’ve heard from a good source that Woodgate is off at the end of the season, he wants to be a no.1 and with Carrick getting a new contract there’s no imminent prospect if that happening at Boro.
