Some positive from the Gazette

Sounds like deals for Carrick, Jones, McGree, Rav and possibly Hackney again the in pipelines. One thing is for sure, we do much better now keeping players we want to or at least getting value for them.

Even Akpom who had 1 year left we got a very decent amount for based on his career stats.

It's a good way of trying to help boost the renewals I suppose. Giving the fans hope that we will still have Hackney, RVB and McGree next season.
I'd be very surprised of all 3 of them are here at the end of August. I would be happy if we manage to retain 2 of them.

Crooks signed a new deal last summer and Rogers only signed for us in the summer. Both gone in the following window. Getting them on new contracts might give us a stronger negotiating position should we sell but there is no guarantee it means they are staying. Still a good thing to get them signed up though.

Carrick, Jones and McGree are the ones that interest me there, as their contracts are actually running out.

I'd be very pleased with all 3 signing extensions.

Hackney and VDB are already on long term contracts, and we're not going to offer them enough that it puts them off leaving if they actually wanted to go.
Would be a nice boost to see them being willing to sign a new one, but I doubt it changes much.

That is what I have heard also those players are not for sale and will be the cornerstones of Michael Carricks's side next season.
Hi Rob.
Its typical speculation from the Gazette:

* Not one official source is quoted: "Believed" means DONT KNOW and "are said" means BY WHOM? "Understood" means CANT CONFIRM / DONT KNOW.

Until its official I file this in the bin:

While nothing is yet signed, the club are believed to be close to securing a contract extension with Carrick, as the head coach has just one year remaining on the initial deal he signed when joining the club in October 2022. Talks are said to have been positive, with all parties keen to conclude the deal.

As for key players in Carrick's squad, there are understood to have been positive conversations with Riley McGree and Isaiah Jones over signing contract extensions at the club. The pair are both currently contracted to Boro until the end of next season.

And despite signing a four-year deal when joining the club last summer, the club have held positive talks with Rav van den Berg about extending his contract too - reflecting his importance after an impressive first season at the Riverside.

There are no guarantees with a contract true.

We have to look at each situation on merit. Crooks was only a 1 year extension and was clearly to reduce the amount of squad upheaval that year. The club has shown that it isn't in the business of letting contracts run out, with only McNair in the last couple of years in that situation. He was one of our big earners and in a position (not even a guaranteed. Crooks was largely to protect investment and smooth the transition for the new players......it almost worked but for selling Rogers who had effectively taken Crooks's place.

Rogers, he clearly really wanted the move, and financially it was a very good deal. If we can sell a player at x8 up to x16 the price we bought him, every season we will do well in the long term

I agree that this doesn't remove the risk of losing 1 or more of Jones, Rav, Hackney or McGree. But it does at least increase the cost to buy them out of their contract, while paying them enough to keep them content. With 1 year on their contract what are their values? Jones 3m, McGree 4m? With 3 years it's double or triple that value. Increased contracts for Rav and Hackney shows an intent to build the team around them. These discussions wouldn't be needed if we didn't intend to keep them, they're already under long contracts.

It will be a tough decision for Hackney. Either £20k/week for mid-table championship club or play in the PL for three times that (minimum).

Then again working and developing under a manager that he really admired as a player and was one of the best midfielders of his era is clearly something Hackney is relishing. He says as much whenever interviewed. He will be just looking to get fit again after a hugely frustrating season of injuries.

.........or an extra 50k a week

"Dont worry Michael, I'll set up a Whatsapp group!"

Most people would say positive things like that in public. The reality (for all championship clubs) is that if a PL club comes calling then they'll be off. Hackney is playing in the U21s now alongside other PL players. They'll be in his ear and as much as we all want him to stay and do well for us we really can't compete. He will also know that players like Fry that played for the U21s and didn't leave are still here and haven't progressed. The risk of not leaving when they have the chance is that the chance never comes. I don't think we'd stand in his way either if there was an opportunity for him (and the price was good enough for us)
