Social Care Cap

It's disgusting - and the problem here is that those northern Tories know that this will cost them boatloads of constituencies next time round.

a 3 bed semi in, say, Newton Aycliffe is worth perhaps 80% less than one in, say, Horsham. Doing the standard search, and taking the mid range value for all listings on RightMove - Newton Aycliffe comes in at £147,000 and Horsham at £590,000. Even Slough is at £483,000.

That means that once you have paid for your care out of your equity - in Newton Aycliffe you will be left with £61,000, Middlesbrough, you will be left with £38,000 and in Horsham, you will be left with over £500,000.

It is sickening.

It's another block on social mobility. The children of someone down south will inherit a sizeable 6 figure sum. In the north it will be negligible sum.

This will ensure another generation or two will suffer from a continued north-south divide. The north has been conned, again, there is no levelling up, just a continuation of the status quo and a guarantee of it for another couple of generations or more. The question is, what are you gonna do about it? Recall your MP and kick him out or continue to let him bend you over?

It's abhorrent, dripping with malice and disdain.

It's a policy designed to keep wealth firmly in the South. Remember, these people with half million pound houses haven't got there through work and intelligence, they just happen to have lived through a property boom.

Now there wealth is protected and allowed to be handed to their children, furthering the huge disparity and social division.

On the back of the recent NI rise which unfairly attacks the low paid this is surely the final straw for all those red wall tories?

It won't be , they will be forgiven in the name of brexit

Totally agree the disparity between North and South will only be exacerbated by these new regulations.

Like I said on the earlier thread I had never given the social care situation much thought until it looked likely my Mum would have to go into full time care earlier this year after her health and mobility deteriorated quickly.

The costs were a real eye opener to me. Mum and Dad had worked all their lives and been careful with their money and had modest savings and she loved her 3 bed semi in Acklam which she had bought new in 1970. That was her major asset and would talk about how she wanted to leave it to her kids and grandkids to help the after she had gone.

Home costs that I looked at were over £1k a week - her house isn't worth much more than £100k and it would have broken her heart to have to sell it to pay for less than 2 years of care (in a home that she would never have wanted to be in).

We've only been spared having to go through all this by the fact Mum declined further and passed away in August.

I feel desperately sorry for other families who have to go through this.

Anyone else feel like it's getting more and more apparent that the general populace just don't get how they are actively allowing all this to go on?
You'd think that if people actually sat down and added up how these years of Tory rule, from austerity through to Brexit and the Great Covid Robbery have cost them then they'd vote them out en masse.
The underlying worry I have is that we have become so self-absorbed as humans that we just don't care about the rest of society as long as we're not struggling.

I find it quite shocking when I'm at some kind of gathering where I end up speaking with people outside my usual circle.

There is a bewildering lack of any kind of political engagement amongst far too many members of our society. They can give you chapter and verse on love Island though.

I know, I'm really fun at a party!

I see signs in the media now though that the tide might be slowly turning against the government.

So sorry for your loss. And yes, the situation you describe highlights the spitefulness of this legislation

I've noticed the usual tory shills on this site are very, very quiet recently.
Some things are completely indefensible and even they can surely see that. Given the way this wretched, corrupt rabble is getting increasingly worse by the day I don't see them resurfacing any time soon.

U turn incoming according to the evening standard. The Lords are going to push the bill back with amendments so it looks a bit unlikely to pass through at the second reading.

Yup, if they try and defend it it means that the subject stays alive longer. Probably been told to just ignore it and it'll blow over then start with the Keir Starmer is a weak leader trope in two weeks

They managed to survive the one when the HoL suggested it was not a good idea to pump more raw sewage into our rivers.

I'd pity any poor soul that ever bought a car driven by Boris.
Handbrake shot from incessant uturns. Front end smashed up after being crashed numerous times on clear days.
Engine would make a goddam awful noise.
Dash cam would be worn out, full of accidents, mostly in the rear view camera. Indicators reversed as he signals to do one thing then does something completely different.
A clutch full of straw.
Taxpayer funded Johnny wrappers strewn under the back seat.
A boot full of fancy dressing up costumes and pointless ppe.
Lights would all be out.
Big slogan down the side, something about giving £3.50 to the NHS.
Sat Nav that only directs you to the nearest airport or Peppa Pig World.
Lopsided suspension after he levelled it up himself.
And the state of the upholstery.....urgh.

"Buyers Remorse" one might say. He said that about his current Mrs just last week. Would have loved to have been a fly on his expensive wall paper when it got back to her. Like his old car, that's one thing he won't be taking out for a ride anymore.

If the Strandard are reporting this they're will be au turn. Unnamed tory sources are unhappy.
