So what does all this mean for Payero?

Must admit, these are exciting times to be a Boro fan- I haven't felt like this is years. Some really impressive looking recruitment with an eye not just on the present but for the future too. After years of sub standard recruitment and no apparent plan, the club's thinking is starting to look joined up.

The one thing that I am struggling with is the signing of Payero. His signing was the first one that made me sit up and take notice and the first that made me think that maybe things might be about to change for the better. But it simply hasn't happened for the lad yet and I am having my doubts if it ever will. He is undoubtedly extremely talented and is different to our other midfield options. I also think with the riches we now have at our disposal up front, his type of creativity and quality is something we have cried out for for years.

All that said, I just don't see where he fits in with CW's preferred shape, especially with the way the rest of the midfield are performing of late. If McGree comes in too that is another very capable midfielder added to the mix - I am assuming JLS leaves or doesn't make the first team squad if McGree arrives - but it's not as if JLS is blocking the path for Payero, whereas I would expect McGree to be pushing for a starting place. I have seen mentions of Tav being possibly moved on to balance the books [citation needed], but could Payero find a home there?

Is it going to be a case of really talented lad, who it just didn't work out for, or is it a case of waiting for injuries / suspensions and then really trying to grab his opportunity? I really want it to work for him, but I am just doubting if it ever will.

Hard to say. He’s obviously really talented. Injuries and the lack of an obvious position in our current setup haven’t helped him.

Don’t think we should be building a team around him or anything, but I hope he stays. Think he’s good enough to adapt to other positions and he can definitely create chances.

The shape shouldn't be a problem nor should the style really. He's not a number 10, people seem to assume he is, but he's an offensive central midfield player. The tracking back is probably the biggest concern, but than can be learnt.

I think the language barrier is probably a bigger barrier than we realise. Wilder demands quite a lot of tactical discipline and it's probably hard to get the message across. He's also been unlucky with injuries and COVID. Would have had more chances otherwise.

Finally it sounds like his best position (based on the report I've linked) is on the right in a midfield 3. But that's where Crooks has been playing (and excelling).

I wouldn't write him off just yet unless it's clear Wilder just doesn't fancy him (i.e. any rumours he's been told he can leave etc). Lots has gone against him this season, but wouldn't be the first overseas player to take a season to settle in.

I can see him loaned out to a European side. He needs game time and frankly can't see how we can get the majority of the money back if we wanted to sell.

The whole things been a bit of a disaster. That's two managers in 6 months who don't play him. It's that bad that we'd rather move Mcnair into CM and play Bamba at CB whenever one of the midfield 3 are missing.

So he's not trusted or not good enough. I see him more of an actual No10.... Who plays with 10s? Hardy anyone as a luxury.

So if we sign one or even two CMs then you'd say the writing is on the wall. I'd expect a loan and maybe he can come back in the summer and give it another go.

Read the scouting report. He's not a number 10.

Only saw him play a couple of times and he impressed both matches. I don't think it's right to pigeon hole players, most can adapt their talents to suit formation as we've seen with so many of our better footballers over the years.

I'd definitely keep him.

I thought he looked decent towards the end of Warnock's reign. I know someone whose son is a Sheff Utd player and when I talked about us getting Wilder he said you won't see Payero again. Prefers his players to be a bit rugged with experience of English football so tends to buy British. That might be language barrier, maybe he can't get his message across and so they miss instructions but you can see that might be the case with the players that have been regulars for him at Sheffield and here so far.

Will be interesting to see if that is the case long term of if it's just been because of the club's he's been at finding it difficult to recruit internationally in the past.

I didnt think he impressed in his matches myself, he showed lots of potential but he was a long way off the pace IMO

To answer the OP, it simply means he's got to improve and impress if he wants first-team football. I've only seen small glimpses of his 'talent', so I hope we paid nowhere near the rumoured fee.

He’s not a no10, just cos that’s his number doesn’t mean it’s his position. He’s an ‘8’ he fits into the system we play, but due to us winning a lot of games and the form of Matt Crooks he isn’t getting in the team. A loan may be beneficial but I’m not sure where too? Back to Argentina makes no sense, he needs to get used to life in England. It’s a tough one.

spot on Festa -- I was trying to understand this about the lad especially when you review some youtube vids on his. Basically he's a link-up midfielder who can be played in the middle of the park but perhaps he's better on the right side where Crooks and Howson play-- and therein lies the problem. Now with the addition of the Boyd-Munce who will seemingly occupy this same role you'd have to believe that Payero will be gone unless there's another option to play his on the wing but I wouldn't have thought so.

No chance he’s a wing back. His best position is where Crooks is playing, due to Crooks being arguably the player and signing of the season he is rightly on the bench currently.
