So far this decade Bands have only spent 3 weeks at Number 1

I was also listening to that podcast on the drive home from work yesterday and realised that most of my Spotify playlists would be classed as 'heritage acts' now, being bands.

As well as trends changing, I also thinks it's linked to sharing the dosh with fewer people; not from selling singles and albums, but getting an artist out on tour where they can actually make a profit these days.

Bands mean compromising with others. Artistically, money wise. When you really only need a computer to make music, you don't need that.

I think later in the podcast, they were scratching their heads about the biggest bands now formed since 2000, and only really came up with the Arctic Monkeys (bar all the K-Pop and J-Pop stuff).

Libertines
Arctic Monkeys
Kasabian

In UK anyway.

There's still plenty of bands around, they're just not hitting the charts or at the popularity level they were in the past.

Very difficult to get bands noticed these days. Radio 1 ugh, and some of the other stations are not much better.

I see Kerrang has gone from TV now which is quite sad but I suppose it reflects how people are accessing their music these days. Didn't mind half a hour of Kerrang now and then. Suppose its all Tic Toc now but don't have it so not sure.

I always think some of this stuff is cyclical. In the early 2000’s Radio one used to play a lot of rock / alternative / Indie bands. Even some of the heavier bands were played.

I always look at something like Leeds Festival for a general overview of what’s popular at the time.

I remember some of the line ups from ‘03 to ‘06 time being very rock orientated and pretty awesome.

Back in those days I used to do some gig promoting during college etc. and I used to have bands coming out of my ears asking to play and a lot of our gigs were really popular.

Not sure what it would be like these days, but certainly feels like it’s nowhere near as popular as it was once was. Even bands and the popularity of the gigs died off from about ‘08 / ‘09 which was probably the start of the change.

A few of my mates still sometimes go to the ococasional Rock Night but there’s often very few people there, and the ones who do go are the same people who went to Crown / Cornerhouse / Empire back in the day. It’s just they have a little less hair and a have put on a few lbs or have kids!

I wouldn’t go. It’d make me feel too old! 😄

Hopefully the cycle will eventually come back around!

Where are the Rock nights in Boro these days? Not that I'd go to them now but back in my day it was Blaises/Trashed/No-Noise/Blackout/Crown/Sumo

Also occasionally the rock night at Secrets. If you know you know, lol

Haha sounds like we frequented the same places. I went to Trashed for the first time when I was 15 but after that, I went to all of the above most weeks!

There’s a night called Touchdown which is at The SU. Think that’s monthly. Thats more emo/pop punk etc.

I did see posts from a few old friends on my FB feed for a night called Revolver. Looks like it was in a private room at Bloom(?!).

They’ve not posted anything since May though, so looks like it only lasted 5-6 weeks before it was scrapped.

I particularly loved Crown Thursdays and Sumo at Cornerhouse. The early days before they opened up the Indie room were the best for me. Once they opened up the larger room, there was a bit more chew with the Indie Chavs wanting to create a bit of friction in the rock room.

Good times though!

I am not so sure that bands will come back. Its cheaper to tour as a soloist, and touring is where the money is these days.
