Smoggy old town version of dirty old town song doing the rounds on twitter

I met my love
by the Holgate wall,
Dreamed my dream
by the River Tees,
I kissed my girl
by the Ayresome Gates,
Smoggy old town,
smoggy old town.
This is our club
belongs to you and me,
We are the Boro,
Middlesbrough FC,
We may never go up,
but we'll never feel down,
Now we build our own ground,
Now we build our own ground.

What do people think of it?

I think the first verse works really well Bandy.
I'd change the second to:

This is our club,
Belongs to you and me.
We are Boro
Middlesbrough FC
We're not always up,
but we'll never stay down
Smoggy old town
Smoggy old town.

I think maybe some people are over thinking whether the tune can be adopted.

"You'll never walk alone" was from Carousel a 1945 musical set on the Maine coastline in the USA.
"City Ground" takes the McCartney song based on the southern tip of the longest peninsula in Scotland and drops it on the Trent.
"I'm forever blowing bubbles" is also an old American song, as is Blue Moon.
Sheffield's Greasy Chip Butty is a long way from John Denver's Aspen Colorado inspiration for Annie's song.

The tune will work. It's nothing complicated. The crowd will set the tempo and will likely be sang quicker than the original. Similar to fields of athenry at anfield.
Once you got it going on the away buses and in the away pubs it could catch on.

I like Indeed's second verse (y)

I wrote a shiit hot song about 15/16 years ago to Jerusalem that named all of the Carling Cup winning team (except Ricketts) and Schteve and Gibbo which I thought would’ve made a good club anthem. No one seemed interested, not even that composer fella (David Golightly?) who used to post on here (iirc) and Teamtalk who was a Boro fan.

Oh well, c’est la vie.

Pasted it on here and we’ll compare it.

It could end up being a bit like Britain’s Got Talent. 😜

Would be a great if we got a real decent original song that didn't have any players or managers names in so we're not having to re hash it every 6 months.

Steve Gibson’s feet in days gone by
Walked upon Wales’s mountains green
And was our Steve McLaren
at Wales’s national stadium seen.

In February two thousand four
Mark Schwazer played in our goal
And Danny Mills and Franck Quedrue
Played left and right of our back four!

Show me goal of Joseph Job
Show me skills of Juninho
Show me the heart of Georgie Boat
Show me the courage of Ugo

Doriva, Mendieta
And Bolo who no put us 2 up
With all the Boro fans go wild
As Southgate lifted our first cup!

T-T-Teesside’s etc

Carling cup team immortalised forever

Good teamwork from OP and Indeedio

Its a winner from me

Ewan McColl wrote Dirty Old Town song in the late 1940s I think. When I first heard it I thought it was about the Boro. Roger Whittaker later released it then the Pogues as well as eleven other groups and artists.

I was guess Salford and the Boro are similar or were in the 1940s.

I cant take any credit for it mate. I just copied it from twitter. The lack of any obscenities makes it family friendly too (if that matters to people these days 🤷‍♂️)?

I remember being at Fulham away a few years ago - personally think it is a ground that doesn't warrant swearing...

The Times ran a report about the game and commented on the atmosphere -
'The Middlesbrough fans were in great voice wonderfully bereft of the usual obscene chanting heard these days'
