Smith retiring from football..

Such a shame.

Loved him when he played for us, those few times.

The Sunderland away game where he kicked Jack Clarke and had him in his back pocket all game was brilliant.

We've never replaced him neither.

Was such a leader on the pitch too.

Best of luck to him in whatever he does next. When he started appearing on Sky as a pundit I wondered if his playing days were over.

We miss his character on the pitch, no doubt about that.
Yeah, I wonder if he'll stick around?

I wonder if he wasn't injured we'd have extended him anyway, it felt like the time was right to replace him.

All the best to him in retirement; a shame it has to happen this way though.

He's been nothing but professional.

Maybe not the best player in himself, but made others around him better.
I think I said at the time he was playing, as an individual I preferred Dijksteel, but the team was better for having Smith in it.

I liked him and think we’ve really missed him. He had that little bit of nastiness, for want of a better word, that is so missing from our current line up. Hope he enjoys retirement. Injuries aside, he was a good signing.

He was a very shrewd signing and we’ve struggled to replace him. Good luck to him whatever he does next.
With Giles on loan, question marks over Bangura still injury wise, Engel presumably done here, Dijksteel out of contract and Ayling looking a broken man, we could well need two new fullbacks again to start next season, cover or an upgrade on Borges and an upgrade on Ayling and probably a third as a rotation option with our Starship Troopers style training ground.

A real shame for him. Was a solid signing for us and provided the solidity that allowed Giles to push on and be so creative in that season. Was a really important member of the team?

What was the injury that ended it. Wiki said he had an ankle injury against Bham in 2023. But did he then suffer another injury after that?

And he showed his experience by making sure players didn't get too carried away celebrating after we'd scored that day, as he knew we needed to stay focused.

What a class statement from him too. Must be so hard to make such a decision when you could feasibly have another 2-3 seasons ahead of you. He always comes across well on 5Live when he is on, hope he keeps some connection with Boro going forward.

Gutter for him, he was a very important player in that first season under Carrick.

One of my standout memories from Smith was the way he acted when we were battering Sunderland last season. Getting onto the players whilst they were celebrating basically telling them to focus, at least that’s what it looked like.

Hope he has a successful media career.
