Sin Bins in Professional Football

Expect trials of it over the next couple of years. I quite like the idea of it to be honest.

I wouldnt be against a sin bin for a pre defined list of offences, where a yellow doesnt seem enough, but a red is too much.

I would also like to see the offside law completely removed from the game apart from the 18 yard box.

It seems a good punishment for dissent or repetitive fouling. Maybe accidental fouls that prevent an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Like an accidental hand ball.
In my opinion red cards should be reserved for dangerous play, violence or deliberate fouls that prevent a goal.

Time wasting would be another offence where I think a sin bin would be good. Referees are obviously very reluctant to send players off for time wasting. Maybe if it was a sin bin they would be more inclined to enforce it.
When you see players get yellow cards for time wasting, they don't stop. They just continue. They know there's no way a referee is sending them off for it

It’s a NO from me - players would soon learn how to foul/cheat and disrupt knowing they will only get minutes in a vibrating warm chair - just let the ref….ref
A sin bin would be an extra tool to assist the ref in my opinion.
There's a lot of instances where a ref is unwilling to issue a second yellow because they don't feel like the offence warrants a red and they get a bit stuck with a no win situation. I think there's a place for it.

The Sunderland red card against us earlier in the season was a prime example. In my opinion the ref was correct to issue he second yellow and send him off as per the current laws. Obviously it was met with a lot of scrutiny and maybe a sin bin is a better punishment in such instances.

How about shorten matches to 60 mins. Stop the clock when the ball is dead. Gets rid of loads of time wasting instantly.
Remove ‘injured’ players immediately when they go down. Stops play acting as their team goes down a player.
Oh and multi-ball when the captain plays their joker card!

I think it’s a good thing for those “take one for the team” situations where fouls are deliberate to stop dangerous counter attacks. A red would be too much in that situation usually but a yellow doesn’t seem enough since it happens in nearly every game at least once.

Just another fudge and even More to argue about,,
I can hear it now - is it a yellow, is it a sin bin, is it a red.😡

The impact is easy to manage in footy - just get everyone behind the ball. Rugby is so different.

I read this was to deter the cynical fouls that aren’t dangerous and limit dissent..

Just send the firkers off - that will sort it

Would be much better if they just used the rules they already have and actually enforce them. Book people for cheating, diving, dissent, time wasting etc and it would stop. It only happens because they are allowed to get away with it. Another quasi-punishment is just going to mean more gaming the system.

The sin bin isn’t being proposed instead of a second yellow but as part of the punishment for a first yellow if it’s for dissent or a stop an attack foul. They’ve been trying the first one in the Northern League for several years but I think the second one is new.

As far as I know, a second yellow is still going to be a red.

Spot on
Remember this season, like others, started with the fanfare that referees would clampdown on dissent and only allow the captain to comment.
I’ve seen a few good examples but, for the most part, it has been watered down.
