should we have closed the borders?

I’m happy to criticise the government when it’s due and from what I can see it’s lacking in so many areas.
However I find it very difficult to criticise in the handling of this case. We are dealing with a disease that the entire world was unprepared. Even the biggest experts are still studying it: they don’t quite know the transmission rate, nor the death rate, nor how the virus survives on surface los and for how long and at what environmental conditions. Therefore the government has to make decisions on how to deal with something that we don’t know how well it spreads, how bad it is, or how long it will be around for. There’s literally no right answer to this one

Look at how China has handled it; look at how Italy has handled it; look at how Spain is now handling it, and then say that it's 'very difficult' to criticise the Govt on their handling of this issue. They are doing NOTHING

The Gov are not doing nothing... they are listening to scientific advice, getting prepared & informing the public on how best to mitigate the spread..

The Gov won't stop the spread - we will. Give us good information, allow us to be responsible & - as the Gov & NHS hope - we can draw out the time before peak infection & make it a more gradual process without damaging & disrupting people lives & the economy too much..

I think being an island has helped.. there will certainly be fewer people flying in from affected areas.. so positive reaction & not over reaction..

Italy? They have handled it terribly. They closed the borders and thought that was it. The fact you have referenced Italy in order to have a pop at the government shows you are simply trying to have a pop without any reason

Impossible to say whether it would make any difference. The analysis will be done in years to come and the governments of all countires will be judged on their respective performances.

Not true. They imposed restrictions in Lombardy a couple of weeks ago and effectively locked down 11 northern towns at that point too. More than we're doing.

Unfortunately the Libby from finance far outweighs that of science when it comes to the last few governments.

It's reflected in the debate on here so often. Don't do what's right, do what keeps the status quo intact.

Yes, yes the did. Italy, with it's small population, has more deaths from the virus than any other country except China. To use an example that clearly hasn't worked to attack our government doesn't really make a lot of sense.

The example is that this is where we're heading as we're two weeks behind them with fewer restrictions.

WHO have now said it's a pandemic and Director General has said :
Swift action can prevent larger clusters and community transmission and even if they fail to do so “they can turn the tide”.

The challenge is not whether countries can change the course of the virus but whether they will, Tedros says.

Italy has a population of 60m people. They are about 2-4 weeks ahead of us on this. Why do you think the measures haven't worked? Do you know what the fatalities would have been without those measures?

Italy have now closed all pubs, bars shops apart from food and pharmacies.

WHO are saying enough is not been done. Ill say again should of closed the borders!

I can imagine the situation in this country if we adopt the measures Italy is now...

Theres too many people who know better than what ever they are told...

I'm just sticking to the fact that a massive % more people have survived contracting the virus than have succumbed to it...

However if we do have luck down I will try my best to cope and comply with any rules imposed...

All flights from Schengen countries to USA stopped as are any people who have visited a Schengen country in the previous 14 days.

That really just displays Trump's complete ignorance.

while i am no fan of tango man, i dont think he came to this decision on a whim, im guessing there will have been advisors involved in this, probably even campaign managers as it makes him look desisive and strong just in tme for an election...

That is another problem. He has replaced all the advisors who know anything with yes men.
