Should Middlesbrough Council finance the £20m Ski Centre?

No chance. Council should invest in something like wet and wild.
That place went into administration years ago. It reopened but lost a lot of money and then closed again. An arena would also be dreadful, so would a sports complex. Middlesbrough already has a high quality one that was built in recent times. People proposing these things think they are playing a computer game.

Pains me to agree with Flar's worst comedy invention but he's right.

Same as when a shop closes down you see people (mainly on social media) saying things like "They should open a <Insert name of their preferred shop here>" as though if it was commercially viable the company wouldn't have already done so.

We didn't suggest a 'sports complex' - we said a world-class swimming pool - that's much better for the people of Middlesbrough than a Ski Centre

Would an Olympic sized pool be used by enough people to justify the cost when there are a number of other pools in the area? Aren’t the other pools also run by the council? They would therefore take a big hit in income by opening another bigger pool and I’m not sure the total number of swimmers would increase by nearly enough people to justify it.

I think a 'world-class' facility could do well - particularly with an adult Olympic sized pool, diving areas, family/children only pool, etc - I mean there's a few pools in the area - but nothing to write home about

They should only provide funding if the investment is virtually guaranteed to be paid back in the short to medium term as some have claimed. I seriously doubt it could be.

Now that would be a White Elephant! :)

Not that I think it would be possible but how about something like this to replace the Blast Furnace on the South Gare

This is the "Copenhill" from Copenhagen in that there Denmark. It is a "power from waste" plant but with a built-in artificial ski slope and recreational facilities. Views from the top would be breathtaking.
People with vision ,clearly. Missed the boat as there is a power plant using waste already being built in that area.

I’m sure it would do ok but it would only divert customers from other council run pools with a few extras from out of town and some athletes training there. If wet and wild couldn’t turn a decent profit, I doubt a 50m pool with diving and child friendly pools would either.

Middlesbrough currently run 2 swimming pools both are hugely subsidised. Mr Preston did go on about a new pool when he was campaigning to get elected, but now he knows they are huge loss makers he has never said a word about it since.

If you’re going to be ambitious, really go for it and install a highly efficient public transport underground loop system like the one they’re building in Vegas. They reckon it’s down to under £10m per mile to bore the tunnel. You could cover Nunthorpe to the Riverside with a few pick up and drop off points along the way for about £40m. Running costs would be relatively small so once it’s been built, the money would roll in. Imagine getting to games and back in a few minutes with no traffic.

No they shouldn't. I could understand giving private investors in the scheme favourable conditions on tax etc but it must be them putting up the money to build and run it.
