Should Colin Pitchfork be released?

I would like to see all life sentences for certain crimes but he was sentenced according to guidelines and the law says he has served his time.

It means that we should release him because that's what the law says.

For me the law is wrong and there should be all of life sentences available to judges, but there isn't.
Not sure what you mean with the last paragraph?

There’s loads of people serving whole life sentences in the UK.

The article even says that under current sentencing guidelines that had he committed those crimes today he would be sentenced to a whole life sentence.

Was that the change that came in in 2017 allowing full life sentences? Can't quite recall. In any event when he was sentenced life sentences were not available. As much as it sticks in my craw he should be released.

I knew him when I was younger, grew up in the same village. He is 5 years older than me.
He always had a reputation and there was talk about what he did to the younger kids at scouts.

I eventually left the area, but went back to Leicester for university, my mates were tested as part of the DNA test. I couldnt believe it when it turned out to be Pitchfork that was involved.

Years later I moved to a city in the South West and found out that he was in an Prison there and was often let out on day release. I cant seem to get away from him and I am still somewhat fearful of him.

Please keep him locked up, as he was a real wrong one.

No idea if it’s recent or not.

But as far as I know of you are sentenced to life (with a minimum term of x years) that means that you CAN spend the rest of your life in prison. You are only eligible for parole after x years. It doesn’t mean you HAVE to be released after x years.

The parole board can keep him in until the day he dies if they want to.

You'd have to be spectacularly stupid or deranged not to be let out when your tariff ends. Just take the courses, be polite to prison staff and make sure you give the right answers. Then you'll be let out to begin you're raping and murdering again. Luckily many lifers are spectacularly stupid and deranged.

He will probably get his release overturned. The sex element will mean the liberals hush themselves.

True but haven't the parole board already agreed to release him? To refuse parole, there would have to be a reason for that, I would think.

Bloody hell, that's quite scary. If you're somewhat fearful I'd consider a username change in case he ever does see release from jail, which he should never get based on the view of the cps and parole board

Edit: didn't see the post above which says parole are considering release. Poor decision based on publicly available information

The parole board have released him. They are being asked to overturn that decision. They probably will as they have the threat of a "root and branch" review hanging over their heads over the release of the multiple taxi rapist, the release of that fella who attacked people in streatham and the measures put in place to safeguard against the fishmongers hall attacker. Then again judges can get very bolshy when they see their position under attack.

It's an interesting time for Boris. The cuts made a decade ago are at the heart of every failure. He can't blame it on another government. He can blame it on the ideology of austerity, but I've a feeling we are going to be revisiting that shortly.

The article states the parole board have agreed to release him. But the justice secretary has 21 days to request they consider their decision.

But I think the point of the thread was aimed at asking if we think he should be released. As opposed to will he be released / or should the parole board stick to their current decision / ignore the justice secretary request to reconsider their decision.

Sentences can be reduced / increase if they were deemed unduly harsh / lenient.

Sentencing can only be amended in the event of an appeal I believe.

In any event, he was sentenced, served his sentence and was paroled. The law should be followed I believe, as distasteful as it may be.

Have to agree with Laughing in the same vein the Begun should be tried here. The law has to be sacrosanct. If the law does not work then change it.

There are not that many whole life prisoners, between 25 and 75 depending which data is available one is Mrs West.
