Set piece bonus ~ Brentford Fc

Is Ben Mee saying they try more at set pieces because they get an incentive bonus at the end of the season?

I'm not sure I would be happy as a fan hearing that, surely they should be busting a gut either with or without a bonus.

I see what you're saying but most human beings are incentivised by money to a certain extent. Might make them stay on after training to practice them for instance. Or come up with something innovative themselves.

It's a area we need to improve. We seem to concede alot to corners freekicks or long throw ins. Yet don't score many from them

There was an interview with the old Notts County manager which i thought was brilliant. He said his research showed how few goals were scored from traditional corners swung into the box and looked at how long the team taking the corner had possession of the ball against how quick the defending team regained the ball and looking at the negative influence of launching the ball into the box thus probably losing the ball and being subject of a counter attack when majority of your defenders and usually slower players were forward and the oppositions pacy attackers could get forward, so he taught and got his team to play short, keep the ball and work openings. We might look into something similar. Keep the ball and the other team can't score.

We did that at the start of the season if you remember. All short corners and keeping possession.
I suppose having the big fellas up for the set-piece contributed to Isaiah's injury. He was covering deep when he was pushed to the ground.

I can't remember that, my memory is rank but i think when you look at how many goals a team scores from set pieces, if its very few then you need to think is it worth getting the big lads forward and risking losing possession or do we just play short and keep the ball, reset and start again to keep the ball. Everyone wants the perfect corner swung in and then met by a towering centre back but it very rarely happens especially with all the protection keepers get and the pushing/pulling in the box now more often than not the ref blows for something anyway. I'd 100% be in the camp on play it short, keep the ball, reset and go again over launching it in and risking a counter attack.

Our best worked dead ball was the corner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The whole move had the Chelsea players baffled but not sure if it would have worked against a top team. ;)

Carrick said after Sunderland that Leadbitter has been working with the team on set pieces.

We do seem to have improved and been a bit more creative with set pieces lately. Just don't think our players are very good when attacking headers.

We did start with short corners at the start of the season - to many fans disgust.

Seemed to just sack it off in the end
Instead we just hit the first man, give away a FK or some other form or returning the ball to the opposition.
I'm surprised with Carrick's approach of playing possession based football, opening teams up, playing out from the back and keeping hold of the ball etc that he's happy to just keep pumping balls into the box from corners.

Yes the one now at Swansea? Luke Williams

Depends who's in your 11 at the time regards corners I suppose. Clarke Crooks and Coburn offer a different conundrum for their defense as opposed to Greenwood, Azaz and Fry.
I do think we're missing a trick with the lack of a long throw at times.
Even if they get cleared, it's often not very far and the opportunity to recycle it is there.
On top of that, it puts some doubt in a defense, where as always short means then know they can always press.
I'm not advocating a return to the Shotton days, but even the best clubs do occasionally do it.

I wasn’t against it. We are useless at Corners anyway.

The biggest whiners were / are those who still hate when we play out from the back or go back to keep possession.

“Get it forward” “Knock it long” “Get it in the mixer” - that type of thing. It’s a common trend.

The irony is that when we do go long and lose it, they’re often up in arms shouting about that too. Can’t win with some people.
