Second Class Day Return to Sheffield Victoria please.

Yes, Toton was notoriously difficult. York was probably easiest.
York was our best result, you could see a lot from the NRM car park anyway or on the train past, but one day we decided we'd have a cheeky sneak straight through the front door of the office next to the sheds, thinking we'd get in trouble if we got caught, we never got far before being apprehended, but instead of a bollocking and getting kicked out the bloke who caught us gave us a show around the sheds and provided us with a list of all the loco's in there that day. Result.

Never tried getting in Thornaby, we took it for granted I think because it was local, used to just try and get numbers on the train past.

There could always be a surprise in Thornaby in the period after they had the wheel lathe installed (early 80s?). Saw all sorts in there you wouldn't normally see including preserved stuff, and a lot of out-of-area locos like Deltics and 56s (at the time).

My uncle was a driver so I used to gamble he'd be on shed when I fancied a look round (which wasn't that often, coz like everyone else I took it for granted). I never saw him there though, but they still let me round sometimes, not always.

Still used to pop round with me mate who worked there as a shunter, then a driver, right until it closed past EWS days - no notebook, though ;)

Wasn't Thornaby the last proper roundhouse to be built in this country? You can still see the imprint on the ground as you go past on the train.
Yes it was a crying shame when they demolished it. Was the last depot built for housing steam engines I think in late 50s. It was built to take over from Newport, Stockton, Haverton Hill and possibly a few other older ones.
