Seagull(s) of the Day

I was just thinking of your seagull threads when having a little reminisce to myself about previous yrs on the board. Then this pops up 👍
Another subject I remembered was the 'Rolling Stock updates'. Can't remember who that was though.

Coincidence as I was walking home tonight there were 4 jackdaws eating some bread buns that somebody had dropped. ( This is not a Dads joke). There were about 20 gulls flying above but none of them seemed brave enough to come down and challenge the Jackdaws. They were just screaming as they do. The gulls outnumbered them and were probably nearly twice the size. Wonder what evolutionary trait prevented conflict here?

I could be wrong but they were probably black-headed gulls which are quite small and meek compared to herring gulls who are naturally bold and aggressive, especially when it comes to food. They would have probably bullied their way into the mix no problem, but still I wonder if many birds do think twice about tangling with corvids, given their superior intelligence and craftiness.

Thanks for the reply. They were herring gulls.
I was recently fishing at Selset reservoir. There’s a colony of about 400 black headed gulls there. They were quite small and quite elegant looking close up. About 20 were dead on the opposite shore to the colony. Bird flu.

Corvids are hard as nails. I've seen just a single crow give buzzards a hard time ... they're even worse in groups. ASBO material.

Round our way we have great black-backed gulls which are massive. They can be a bit naughty too. See the youtube video "Great black-backed gull swallows a rabbit whole" as evidence for the prosecution.
