Scottish Government U-Turn

I think the main issue was they downgraded more if you were from a poorer area, not that they downgraded in general.

Going to be worse down here with A-level and GCSEs- more students taking the exams and the disadvantaged will continue to do worse (as they do yearly). The issue is that they are linking prior attainment of the child and the school which will penalise some and over exaggerate the grades from schools that have historically done well. There will be a unturn down here and schools will be on a phased return which will be uturn 2 before sept.

Just another way from ‘oor Nicola‘ of trying to buy the votes of the young if another independence vote ever comes.

This won't be the end of it. Teachers who attempted to make an honest prediction will find their kids disadvantaged compared to those whose teachers adopted a 'give them all an A*' approach (or whatever the scots equivalent is).

I thought that this was more about the previous historical performance of the schools to out turn results, for example if a school previously had say a 60% pass rate for many years, how could they justify a step change to say 90% pass rate. There needed to be some kind of moderation to make it fair for this and future years. Seems the media wanted to turn it into poor v rich.

The bit I dont get is why have they allowed the 'flawed system' (in their words) for students to keep the upgraded grades churned out by the system.
There is no credability in the results for this year might as well had a raffle

But as others have said its purley politcal as the young are her base.

Watch out for Thursday when the other 3 nations give out their results, they will have to do the same or they will completely be disadvantaged

The schools who ‘historically perform poorly with low exam results’ where graded accordingly, as surely because of a pandemic doesn’t suddenly improve It and make it a better performer. True that 2 or 3% Of students have excelled In the school, and will miss out on better results, but it means giving the remainder higher grades than what they would have got had they taken the exam. yes, it is a horrible situation but poor performing schools shouldn’t be marked up due to the virus.

It is not the schools who are being marked it is the student. It is not the school who will be looking for a job in the near future, it is the student. It is not the school who the prospective employer or university will be judging on exam results- it is the student. I feel sorry for students, employers and higher education establishments. How on earth can they make a decision on who to accept.

Uturn 1 has occurred. This lot are utterly clueless- now students can use mock results (where many schools didn’t get chance to set them due to Covid).

Why should even 1 student miss out on the grades they deserve because of past performance of the school? The only fair way was to go with the grades predicted by teachers, not some dodgy algorithm.

Because (according to UCU), ony 16% of students achieve their predicted grades or better in A levels and Highers.

Massive point being missed here is the students didn't get to sit the exam so how is it fair to pick and choose by lottery who would and wouldn't have achieved their predicted outcome.

Far fairer for most to be marked up rather than a few marked down.

From the same report:
"Meanwhile, at the top of the attainment distribution, grades are slightly more likely to be under-predicted, and among these high-attaining students, applicants from low income backgrounds are significantly more likely to have their grades under-predicted than those from high-income backgrounds"
