Sciatica

Anyone suffer from this? I had it bad back in 2008 but pretty much free of it since then but now back with avengeance, caused literally by scraping some moss of the paving in the back garden was nothing at all, but causing pain, tingling and some numbness down my left leg, coming up to 4 weeks, how long does it normally last? Getting depressed with it now, having to sleep on my back with a pillow under my knees, just popping a couple of neurofen before bed? Any tips from anyone on exercises that may help or indeed things to avoid??

I found losing weight and ensuring nothing was in my back pockets helped me.
As for a remedy, try red Tiger Balm. It won't get rid of it, but it'll probably relieve some of the pain.

Unfortunately with this time is also a great healer.

Anti inflammatories help, and some pain relief.

If its really bad, go see the doc.

I ended up with a discechtomy in 95 because of mine, lasted about 9 months.

Its the most niggling pain, just getting over my 2nd disc rupture in my neck, surgeon reckons it will take a year to fully fix, hopefully no surgery this time.

Wife reckons I am just spineless.

Just getting over it after about 7 weeks, go and see your Doctor, I was put on naproxen (anti inflammatorys ) for a couple of weeks but did nothing , went back to Doctors and put on gabapentin, which kick in after a couple of weeks, also go and see a physio for some exercises, its agony I know but it will get better 👍

I'm beginning to wonder whether I might have it.

For months now I've been getting a shooting pain in my left foot. It seems to work its way up my leg and I then have what I'd describe as a dull ache in my left thigh. The pain only lasts for a minute and it only occurs once or twice a day on average.

Thanks mate, will invest in some pain relief cream and pop some nurofen, got a call with a physio next week, that work pointed me to, so they may recommend some exercises. Trying to keep as active as possible but not heavy impact stuff, doing plenty of walking and used the lumber support bike at the gym.

Thanks mate, got an over the phone spot with a physio next week sorted by work and an appt with the physio at my doctors on 10th July, will keep active and invest in some pain relief cream and anti inflamatories, cheers

Could be a mild form mate

My daughter is a chiropractor, see one of them first and then they will refer to a physio for the correct exercises. Suffer occasionally myself, she recommends pain killers, anti inflammatorys and an exercise regime involving stretching.
Keep moving as much as possible and dont just lie in bed even though it may seem more comfortable.
Hope you feel better soon.

My wife had terrible problems with her sciatic nerve for about 18 months. She did physio, took lots of painkillers (gabapentin) and she was able to do very little exercise. It had a massive impact on her mental wellbeing. It was a just awful for her. After various scans and discussions with speciailists, she had an operation in December - they believed a herniated disc (and overgrown cartilige around it) was ompressing the nerve completely and so they took part of the disc and some of the cartilige away. It didn't work and the pain remained for another 4 months or so. However, they went back in and repeated part of the procedure and now she does not feel constant pain in her leg and she has started swimming again. It's changed her life, really, so there is definitely hope. In this case, surgery was the only option but there will be other remedies that work. Don't give up.

Naprixen was effective for me but I had to be careful as I had an ulcer previously.
Used to take about 3 days from starting with the pain to pain free.
Tried gabapentin as I had heard good things but it knocked me for a 6.
Tens machines worked well and they are easily affordable these days in fact some GPs will lend you one.

Leg was aching from about 4:30am today, so ended up getting up at 6am to take a couple of paracetamol, have a cuppa and walk around the garden, it does seem to ease up when I walk and am more active, I think I will make a GP appt today, even if it is just to prescribe some pain relief, even though I do have a physio appt with them on 10th July. It was much easier when I was off work for a couple of weeks, as did plenty of walking which helped a lot but now I am back at my desk job and sat for long periods it has really exacerbated it.

Check out Tom Morrison on You Tube , he does an exercise for Sciatica which helped me, it’s vey tough to start with but might help till you can get a chiropractor or physio appointment, hope this helps a bit, 👍

Mate of mine had this years back.

We drove to the west end of Newcastle, bought him a bag of skunk and then smoked it with him whilst listening to the Aphex Twin. Seemed to work wonders.

I appreciate this may be a bit specific.

If you're overweight, lose it. My sciatica was so bad in 2016 that I could barely walk for the first couple of hours of the day - all I could do was shuffle, with my right foot turned inward at 45 degrees. My GP recommended I lose at least two stone, which I did. It cleared up completely.

Sitting in the same position all day is definitely bad for it, too. Try to get up regularly and move about for a couple of minutes as often as you can. I still get flare-ups, but they're usually when my weight creeps up or when I've given up on exercising.
