Sciatica caused by herniated disc

Had a problem with two discs touching my nerve. Also had a herniated disc. My left leg would constantly freeze up. Operation last September seems to have fixed both problems. I do a 5km walk 5 times a week. This is important. It takes a while for the spine to re-adjust.

I'm looking to do walking myself to recover from the surgery. Walking is great exercise for the core, but was impossible before the op.

Update on my dodgy back.

Into the 5th year of chronic pain which I try to manage by maxing out the Ibuprofen dosage.

I love Ibuprofen but I know it's ruining my gut health, so use cannabis as a replacement, which cuts out the pain messages from inflammation.

I can`t function normally when stoned, so only use on evenings, and continue Ibus during the day.

I'll have to jack my job in, as a major part of it is doing 24/7 on call support once every 4 weeks.

The good news is... I've got a prescription for legal cannabis.

I have built a recording studio around a zero gravity chair, so that I can work reclined as my spine being vertical is not an option I can live with.

Still haven't tried acupuncture yet, but will one day.

So not fixed yet despite everyone having reported brill results?

I’m in my ninth month of being confined to bed, loaded with morphine and stuff, also using cannabis gummies.

I’m able to transfer to a chair next to the bed through having intense physio for 3 weeks 7/7 and some days twice a day.

Started intermediate physio last week, they’ll get my legs stronger to stand ( did 2 minutes today first go) and then teach me to walk. Get me on a frame and I’m able to have a **** by myself- dignity beckons!

That gets me ready for a high risk hip replacement and we start all over again.

I would appreciate any suggestions for a good hospital tablet for entertainment? You know yer stuff!

You said earlier in this thread you said you were hard? I can confirm boys and girls, it’s true the bastad broke my rib with a hug at WHL when I think, Hamilton Ricard completed his hat trick.

Any tips col will be welcomed, but back to your pain?

Don't waste your money on pseudoscience.

I'd try voodoo, if I thought it would work.

Interesting argument SBM v EDM. I'm quite the sceptic when it comes to conspiracy theories, using science to dispell charlatons.

My current spine surgeon is going to use some science based acupuncture on me... a dirty big epidural needle. I don't expect it to work, but you don't win the lottery if you don't whatsaname..

Sounds bad Bud. Hope it's just a hip replacement needed. Why the high risk, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm managing to get out of bed most days as soon as my 2nd round of Ibus for the day kicks in at about 11:30 am. Being prone for 5 years just adds more problems. I even do the pub quiz on Wednesday nights now.

I can't advise what tablet you should get. It's probably driven by whether you're an apple fanboi or not. I'm most definitely not, so I've always had Samsungs. The fella at Currys should be able to help you.

High risk is a combination of health factors, osteoporosis means the hip bones are grinding each other away and will possibly crumble during the surgery, they have to remove the ironmongery from a failed op last year, joint arthritic. I have COPD but my heart normal for my age (67) I went into toxic shock last time but I had a gangrenous foot which is now dry and apart from waiting for the end of my big toe to part company is healed up

Yeah we have apple at home

I ended up in Hospital twice about 15 months ago because of sciatica. Had to pay privately to get an MRI and it showed a couple of slipped discs and bulge into the nerve. Private surgeon was furious with the treatment under NHS and decided to not charge me for his support. I now have an MRI every 4-6 months. I had to pay privately for physio as they actually worked the nerve. It was awful - very painful! I was due to have an operation but avoided it because im managing it at the moment.

Initially a tens machine really helped me. Put it on my leg and it relaxed the muscles around the nerve so I could walk. Now it’s walking. Cycling and LOTS of swimming. I started in children’s pool where I just walked up and down. Now I do full lengths in normal pool. Sometimes I do 12-14 hours a week.

It is always on my mind though. Any change in my routine will trigger my back - lots of driving or sitting for hours at work or even change of shoes so I have to plan in a swim around work or ensure I do a walk even when staying away. Anything which helps your core but it took probably a year for me to understand my body and what it likes. Sounds strange but we all react differently.

I wish you all well. It really is an awful pain.

I posted on this thread a coupel of years ago about one of my good mates who has had a trapped sciatic nerve for about 35 years after an accident.
He was on 400mg of tramadol a day, but that was messing up his body and led to him having to have an operation because of it.
He started using cannabis a couple of years ago and found that finally reduced his pain, but it left him zonked and with chronic munchie attacks and he put on a few clem.
For the last six months though he's used CBD oil and high CBD cannabis which he grows and finds that helps with the pain and doesn't make him stoned.
Don't know if any of you have tried it, but may help.

I feel your pain!!

Several years off back pain worsened over time ending up with 3 days of excruciating pain and laying on the floor in agony. Rushed to James Cook after not using the loo for them 3 days, straight down for an MRI and surgery within the hour.
Was told the disc had burst resulting in Cauda Equina.
Woke up from the op and as said above, the pain relief was instant. Few months recovery and 'touch wood' pain free ever since.

Good luck mate, keep us posted.
