Scary Experience

Scary experience, driving home last night we were crossing a bridge over the dual carriage way and noticed a girl (20 ish) climbing over the railings, she looked either drunk or on drugs, we thought wtf what's going on so turned back and by this time she walked along the edge of bridge and was stood in the middle over the road below. Did not really know what to do, but called the police, whilst calling police she actual sat down and was dangling her legs over. I handed the phone over to my partner as they we struggling to understanding my accent we are in Ireland btw. Another guy stopped who was driving under the bridge, we were trying to decide wether to get closer to the girl and talk to her but were terrified we would startle her and she would fall or jump, we had decided to approach her but thankfully the cops then turned up very quickly, they went over to her and talked to her a bit then they both leant over bridge and somehow pulled her back over railings. Fair play to the cops, as were terrified and were unsure what to do in hindsight I think we should of approached straight away after calling the cops to see if she was okay instead of hesitating, hope she is okay

Thank goodness you stopped, so many people these days would just carry on, good on you both.

Think you did the right thing there., going up to her could have startled her, the police are trained for that sort of thing.
But good on you for stopping to help.the 👍

Good man @Fattyfoggon, with a good heart

You may have just saved a life there and as WS above says many would have just carried on without stopping
yeah lots of cars were driving by while we turned round and none of them stopped, it is one of them situations you would never imagine yourself being in, i actually looked up what you should do in that situation when i got home, and it sounds like you should approach and just to let them know you are there and care

You likely saved a life with that call and action. Don't take that lightly, some people will never likely do it in their lifetime. Amazing.

What you did worked, that makes it the right thing regardless. Unless you're trained all you can do is go with your gut instinct. Forget about whether it was right or wrong thing to do and take pride that you may well have saved a young person's life.

Well done FF, I had a similar experience last week. Out walking the dog and a young girl age 15/16 who passed us, kept looking back which I found strange but thought she was looking for a bus.

We carried on and a bit further on and round a corner she had climbed over the inside of a motorway bridge and walking along with one arm outstretched, my heart sunk, my first thought was perhaps and hopefully she is just displaying some bravo and will go right across, but no she then set down facing the on coming traffic. Initially I froze, I'd didn't have my phone and had my dog, I didn't want to go over in case the dog jumped up or she didn't like dogs or it barked. I started waving at cars to stop and call the emergency services but they want past at first. Eventually after what felt like and age but was probably a minute or so people stopped and came running back, they made a call and we waved at the cars on the motorway to stop but they just drove on.

There was a lad on a bike on the other side of the road aged about 18/19 watching what was happening. He then came over leaned over and spoke to the girl and then reached down and got hold of her arm, a women on the other side then did the same and the girl stood up and came back over, phew. I said to the young man, you are a hero, you saved her life and should be very proud, I hope in some way this experience helps to change his life too.

I've had suicide training, and I've often wondered what I would do in this situation as over the years and here it was in real time, a number of people have jumped off this bridge and their are Samaritan notices are at points along the fence.

I wonder how I would have acted if I hadn't of had my dog with me, what would I have done differently? it was trumatic witnessing it. Would I have spoken to her and witness if she decided to jump, what happened if I reached out and she falls or you grab hold and they jump and pull you with them or you have to let go, all very concerning, then I was thinking in some of those senarios could you be prosecuted for manslaughter if she had died. Maybe I'm looking for excuses the avoid a traumatic situation, but for the moment just feeling very much relieved that she survived and hopefully she is getting the help she needs.

A dilemma for certain, and as a police officer I think you made the correct call. Well done ( that sounded less condescending in my head, sorry)

What a horrible situation to be faced with. I think you did the right thing and should be proud of your response, which could well have saved a life.
