Say we don’t go up.

Well if we don't Gibson will back Wilder and we will end up in the top two regardless of who drops down from the Prem.
With regards to the OP strength in depth and team spirit are key to getting out of the Championship not individuals.
If we don't make it this season I wonder if the Cup run did us any harm?
I would have Gibson back tomorrow - I wish it could be Fry/Gibson

Not counting Spence I think we absolutely need to keep hold of our core:
Dijksteel, Fry, McNair, Jones, Crooks, Howson, Tav, Bola & McGree. I realise McGree has hardly played so far but I think he is going to be key for us

If we lose Tav we can just about replace him with McGree. If we lose Fry it will be hard to find a replacement of his quality for a team that is aiming for promotion. In theory, if we lost Dijksteel, McNair could move to RCB but we might struggle to find a LCB of equivalent quality. Unless this season ends really weakly or a Premier league team comes in with silly money for someone, I think we'll be able to keep our core until January at least. If we're not looking good in January there might be a mass exodus then.

Its a big summer regardless, the squad is small. 2 for every position so:

New keeper/Brynn, Daniels, Hemming or Lumley as back up.

Dijksteel, Fry, McNair/ possibly Bamba or Peltier as back up. Need at least 1 new centre back, maybe 2, 3 if Fry gets sold.

Howson, Tav, Crooks/ McGree, Payero as back up. New DM to compete with Howson. Possibly a Tav replacement.

Jones/ not really any current back up.

Bola/possibly Taylor as back up but think a new first choice out and out LWB required.

Watmore, Coburn/ at least 2 new strikers.

So that's potentially:

1 keeper
2 centre backs
1 DM
1 RWB
1 LWB
2 strikers.

8 players needed as a minimum. Possibly 10 if a couple get sold.

We keep the ones we own outright that are playing now. We need to move on Hall, Daniels, Fisher, Ameobi, Akpom. The loan players will leave. Spence will bring in some cash. But we have the nucleus there. We don’t need to be breaking this team or group, we need to add sensibly and use our money wisely. This group has shown it can compete, if Wilder had been in all season we’d be comfortably in the top 6 now IMO.

The strikers need changing up and we need a ‘keeper. Two or three other bits and pieces, but nothing major. We probably need a goalkeeper, left-sided defender, wing back and two strikers. I personally don’t see the need for another huge rebuild.

Will all depend what offers we get, I half expect maybe 2 others to go on top of spence, i think one of fry or mcnair will go and probably tav because of his contract. I just hope we dont get a huge offer for jones thats too hard too turn down.

I think we'll keep hold of Jones purely due to the money Spencer will generate for us. Wing backs are instrumental in how Wilder plays, and he'll be keen to keep hold of the best in the league (Jones).

In fact in relation to this, I'd say 2 new center backs so I'm probably estimating 9 new players
Maybe a few being called up from u23's

That's pretty much what it looks like to me. I think Wood might be let go and one of Peltier or Bamba might get offered a 1 year extension.

Not sure which of the current U23s might make a step-up. Gibson seems most likely as he seems able to play RWB or right midfield. I wonder if Zach Hemming might be the new 3rd choice with Brynn let go.

I do think he'll want a new first-choice left-footed centre-back so that he has the option to move McNair into Howson's role or to cover RWB. McNair does struggle a bit on the left side but Dijksteel has been great on the right and the jury's out whether he or McNair is better as the RCB.

Although we should get a good payday for Spence, I'm not convinced that very much of that will be available to spend on transfer fees.

I know, the season’s not over, but just humour me.

Which players do we absolutely have to keep hold of for next season?

I’d go Jones, Tav, Fry, McNair & Howson are absolute musts.

Crooks, McGree, Bola, Dijksteel & Coburn have done/shown enough.
I think we need to make sure we have some experience and leadership in the team. Particularly at the back. Howson offers it in the middle of the park and Grant Hall was signed to add it at the back but he is always injured and not the right quality. I'd accept losing Fry if we signed a powerful, experienced organiser to replace him. To give us a bit more defensive resiliance. Fry will be a top player, but with McNair and Dijksteel they've got less than 370 starts between them in the top two divisions. Sol Bamba has nearly got that himself and he's a player that's had loads of injuries.

I'd like Howson to stay but he is replaceable, would need to be with someone whose also experienced though, but maybe 3 or 4 years younger.

Tav and McNair would be huge loses. Jones, lets wait and see how he does in second season before we put him in the same bracket, players that don't have the hunger can suffer in the second season. I don't think that will hit him, he seems level headed, but you never know.
