Save Cook Birthplace Museum Petition

Kevin was part of the High Tides charity that gave students the work experience opportunity to sail on a cargo ship from Teesport to Rotterdam, Riga, Helsinki and St Petersburg and calling at all the ports on the way back.

My wife chaperoned a group of young girls on one trip but not sure who chaperoned her. 😜

He also gave my DofE group the opportunity to sail up the Tees on the Pilot Cutter and supported them in an export competition they had entered. Kevin got one of the top women of Casper to spend a day with this group and the information they received gave them the skills to go on and win the competition and £5,000 for camping equipment.

That all sounds really interesting. Something to seriously think over.

Have this message from Captain Cook Birthplace Trust chair Martin Peagam..

"Members of the Captain Cook Birthplace Trust met on Friday with the Mayor, Chris Cooke, and Council Officers. The meeting was instigated by Trust Members Councillor Dorothy Davison and Councillor Jason McConnell.
There was a consensus amongst all those present that everything possible should be done to avoid the need to close the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. It was agreed to work together to identify by the end of January options to increase income and mitigate costs associated with the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, so that closure is not necessary and the Museum continues to play an important part in the educational, cultural, and social life of Middlesbrough.
The Trust is grateful to everyone who has signed our petition, who has expressed support for the Museum, and who has offered ideas for how the Museum could operate in the future. It has been heart-warming that so many people have fond memories of the Museum and are keen to see it continue to be an important part of the cultural landscape of Middlesbrough."

Hi Rob, do you know if the trust contacted Kevin Shakesheff?

Hi Rob, do you know if the trust contacted Kevin Shakesheff?
No. Not yet, NC. We are drawing together a big list of contacts, grants, education and social ideas and ideas in general etc and need to pull together different possible plans. Kevin sounds like a great contact, really grateful to you. I am sure he could be someone that would also have lots of ideas and networks etc that could make a big difference.

He certainly would.

What a shame, to think the previous mayor Andy Preston blew 1.5m on the Crown, without a survey.

It is an absolute eye saw.

Loved the museum as a kid.

Is any lottery funding available to keep it going?

Could some shop work be done by Volunteers to keep costs down.

Could Redcar and Cleveland Council help by increasing signage and promotion? the border is the railway line? which only 400 yards from Stewart Park.

Driving from the Coast and Guisborough direction I don't see many signs for the museum and its hidden from the roads.

Is it promoted at James Cook Hospital - some visitors may want to kill some time and its only 5 minutes drive.

Could a deal be done with discounted entry with a Car Park ticket?

Definitely looking at increased role of volunteers - which will of course mean people coming forward.
But also looking at other ways of supplementing staffing.
Have been pressing for increased signage and web visibility for years. This could be brought in on many different levels.
Not sure about the hospital idea - it could be interesting one. We did actually organise a medical talk about Cook in the hospital but covid caused that to be abandoned.
Car park is free at the moment but if a charge was brought in - part of the consultation - then that might be a possibility. You could also argue that a car parking charge might also potentially reduce the visitor numbers.
Being in a park is both an advantage because there are so many park visitors and a disadvantage because you cannot drive to the museum this means it is not accessible for all.
We need to make everyone know in the park and beyond that there is a museum. There used to be a giant banner at Marton Crossroads. But then I think it has to be investigated ways of changing the attraction through the year, whether that is by events, exhibitions or activities. The truth is there is a skeleton staff at the museum - and I think it has to be a priority not to lose their knowledge, experience and dedication.
Personally. I am optimistic that the museum will not close especially as this outpouring of support and ideas continues.

When I was 14 me and my pal cycled to Whitby. We got there about 10am and stopped outside a terraced property with a sign saying "Captain Cook's House".
We parked up and went inside.
It was a bit disappointing. The first room was a very modern kitchen with Frosties and stuff in the cupboards.
The second room we entered contained a wooden dining table & chairs and a radio playing BBC Radio 1.
Oh, and a young family enjoying their breakfast.
Turned out it was just someone's house. God knows why they decided to call it Captain Cook's House.
We didn't ask them, we just legged it.

So for that reason, I'll sign it.

It needs to be saved as it is one of the main cultural attractions that will bring tourism into the town. Have signed the petition. Totally wrong if its closed

I signed it too.

I will try to visit in the near future and buy something from the shop.

In the past I bought a lovely Transporter mug and a booklet about a McKenzie Thorp Australia exhibition that was there.

More ideas....

Does the Dorman Museum promote the Captain Cook one?

Do all the local schools use the Museum? for History/Geography/Maths/Science projects

Could a member of Museum staff visit schools and spread interest?

The Cook exhibition at the British Library was excellent and probably cost over £0.5m to set up - what happened to all its materials? - I learnt so much and found out what made James Cook so special for his time. Those materials are timeless and could be used for years to come.

If I give a talk on James Cook (and mention the museum) is there a contact at the museum that I can contact

Is there any potential for someone to organise a guided Cook's Tour (Marton to Great Ayton to Staithes to Whitby). I know coach companies in the South do a Yorkshire Tour (staying at Whitby and going to Goathland/Aidensfield and Emmerdale). A James Cook one would be more specialist and more for history lovers, but there are three Cook Museums within 30 miles and a pretty drive through the Esk Valley and Moors, then Staithes and Whitby.

I've signed the petition :) awful to think that this fine cultural museum is being forgotten...all in the name of what might i ask?

Signed. I did my work experience in there during secondary school. They asked me to walk around and make sure nothing was missing. Problem was I had no idea what was in there in the first place.

The public consultation period has finished now - The Birthplace Trust have a meeting with the mayor on the 30th it would be brilliant to have 10 000 names on that petition to present it on that day.
