True story (ish) by the fellow who did peaky blinders - well worth a watch.

First one was brill. Not seen them all yet as keeping them for a Sunday night.

The funny thing is that the book/series has actually been toned down a bit compared to really life as they were actually completely nuts.

The Grenade in the first episode for example was actually not a smoke like in the programme but an actual mills bomb.

It's brill. Very entertaining and some good performances

But most importantly based on reality. And as the show says, you may not believe it but most of it is true!
All available on iPlayer. 6 part mini series

I’ve enjoyed the first episode.

Here is a review by James Holland and Al Murray.

Watched them all, great TV. Can some one explain how these guys and all the navy lot in WWll avoided sunburn?!?!

About the only thing I was disappointed in was Paddy Mayne was a big bloke. He was 6’3”, a champion heavyweight boxer and an outstanding lock forward for the British Lions. The guy playing him is about 5’7”.

The 'Desmonds' came on onboard our ship for a few days once during a big exercise. We had to transfer them up to Scotland from just outside Fishguard.

An totally average looking and unassuming bunch they were. No giants, no Hollywood action heroes, no muscle Bosuns. The majority of them were in their late 30s... some looked older. Didn't separate themselves from us and stick with each other, and were happy to chat to us matelots.

Wouldn't let us carry their grips though 😮🤣

Yes i worked with them a fair bit in the early noughties in the middle east.

Lovely bunch of blokes, very unassuming and happy to chat.

Also used to do some bits and bobs out of Chelsea barracks.

Navy seals on the other hand………..

I don't think they did. Just reading Max Haistings book om Op Pedestal. The upper deck gun crews talk about bad sunburn.

Beat me to it. Also worth watching the Ben Mackintyre documentry Rogue Heroes on I player.

I have a few friends from "the regiment" ... as well as a few in the Swedish special forces who are based near our place in Lapland.
The SAS guys are all small, pretty quiet and unassuming. No egos. Same with the Swedes apart from all of them are 6'3 and over. Gentle giants. The one who used to train Swedish (and NATO) special forces in winter warfare and survival hates the cold and won't tolerate it for a second. :) Now that he doesn't have to (he's back in civilian life).

They are some of my neighbours, as said by other posters, you would never guess.

They sometimes say "we deal with some real crap Red, but nothing like some of the stuff you have to deal with on that FMTTM board" :giggle:

But apart from being shorter than his real-life character, Jack O’Connell is the star act in the show. Brilliant performance.

The show is good, fast-paced and engaging with the Peaky Blinders approach to having contemporary music fit perfectly in an historic drama.

I enjoyed it, but given the quality of the source material, I would have preferred a “Band of Brothers” approach to the story, with more attention on the detail, and other characters.

But it is a very good series. And am already looking forward to series 2
